Primordial Organic Chemistry. I. Compounds Resulting from Electron Irradiation of C14H4

Description: C{sup 14}-labeled methane, together with a number of other presumed primordial gases of the earth's atmosphere, has been subjected to electron bombardments. The products formed have been examined by paper chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet light spectrophotometry. A number of minor molecules have been specifically identified, and urea has been found as a major component in the absence of added phosphine; the formation of urea is inhibited by added ph… more

The Neutron-Deficient Yttrium Isotopes Y$sup 82$, Y$sup 83$, and Y$sup 8$$Sup 4$

Description: Divergences in values of the half life of Y/sup 85/ have been resolved by discovery of a new sup 85/ isomeric state, and the half lives of Y/sup 84/ , Y/sup 83/, and Y/sup 82/ have been evaluated. Powdered arsenic metal targets were bombarded in the Berkeley heavy-ion linear accelerator with carbon ions. Determination by direct decay gives a half life of 39 plus or minus 1 min for Y/ sup 84/. Timed chemical separation values of 9 plus or minus 3 min and 8 plus or minus 2 min were obtained for Y… more

Toxicology of Aurin Tricarboxylic Acid and Its Antidotal Effectiveness Against Beryllium

Description: Monkeys and dogs were used in a series of studies designed to assess the ability of aurin tricarboxylic acid (ATA) to provide protection against acute beryllium poisoning. The acute LD/sub 50/ of ATA was found to be 344 mg/kg for monkeys and 164 mg/kg for dogs. Neither species exhibited significant hematological changes when given weekly ATA doses of 25 mg/kg over an 8-month period. The lethal intravenous dose of beryllium sulfate was 0.6 mg/kg for both dogs and monkeys, but the value increased… more

Detection and Measurement of Nuclear Radiation

Description: The technique of radiation characterization is reviewed, with particular emphasis on new methods and their practi-cal aspects. Each type of detector is discussed in terms of its principle of operation and its applicability to various problems in counting and spectrometry. Auxiliary electronic instrumentation and the function of each instrument are described in general terms. Other topics discussed include low-level counting, absolute counting, and the mounting of radioactive sources. (137 refer… more

NON-LINEAR BUNCH MOTION AT TRANSITION

Description: Inclusion of nonlinearities in the equations for phase oscillations derived for studying proton bunch behavior in the Brooknaven AGS leads to a new stable equilibrium point for the bunch not coincident with the usual stable phase angie. Equations and equilibrium point stability are examined. (D.C.W.)

Index of Refraction and Dispersion of Several Gases in Cerenkov Counter Use

Description: Measurements of index of refraction as a function of gas pressure for carbon dioxide, ethane, methane, sulfur hexafluoride, Freon 13, Freon 14, and Freon 23, which are suitable for Cerenkov Counter use, are reported. These gases do not react with Al or Ag mirror coatings, or other materials used in such counters, and have indices of refraction that are large enough to permit the use of these gases at reasonable pressures. Methane and ethane are both toxic and highly explosive; the remainder of … more

Biological Effects of Blast. Technical Progress Report

Description: The current state of knowledge relevant to biological blast effects was summarized in a selective manner. Initially, five problems of concern to those who would relate the environmental variations produced by nuclear weapons with biological response and hazard assessment were pointed out. Primary, secondary, tertiary, and miscellaneous blast effects were defined and selected interspecies experimental data of a physical and pathophysiological nature useful in estimating human response were prese… more

Adsorption of Krypton and Xenon by Various Materials

Description: The adsorptive capacities of various inorganic adsorbents and activated charcoals for krypton and xenon were determined. Columbia-G activated charcoal had the highest capacity for both krypton and xenon at pressures from 0.01 to 125 mm Hg and temperaturens from 2 to 85 deg C. If a value of 1 is assigned to the capacity of this charcoal at 28 deg C for krypton, other charcoals range from 0.63 to 0.84, molecular sieves (except 4A) from 0.11 to 0.20, and some silica genls from 0.05 to 0.07. Heat Transfer With Laminar Flow in Concentric Annuli With Constant and Arbitrary Variable Axial Wall Temperature

Description: An analysis has been performed to determine the heat transfer characteristics for laminar forced-convection flow in a concentric annulus with prescribed surface temperatures. Three distinct problems were considered: (a) wall temperature prescribed at both the inside and outside wall; (b) inside wall temperature prescribed and the outside wall insulated; and (c) inside wall insulated and outside wall temperature prescribed. The solution for temperature distribution was similar to that obtained b… more
