Simulation of fluid-rock interactions in a geothermal basin. Final report. [QUAGMR (quasi-active geothermal reservoir)]

Description: General balance laws and constitutive relations are developed for convective hydrothermal geothermal reservoirs. A fully interacting rock-fluid system is considered; typical rock-fluid interactions involve momentum and energy transfer and the dependence of rock porosity and permeability upon the fluid and rock stresses. The mathematical model also includes multiphase (water/steam) effects. A simple analytical model is employed to study heat transfer into/or from a fluid moving in a porous mediu… more

Optimization of thermodynamic efficiency in binary-type geothermal electric power generating plants

Description: Calculations and curves are presented which prove that for each turbine entry temperature, there is an entry pressure which will optimize the thermodynamic efficiency of a ''binary'' type geothermal power plant. Comparisons are made between thermodynamic efficiency and another method of rating process efficiency.

Mineral sources of water in evaporite sequences (salado salt and adjacent beds at the proposed waste disposal facility near Carlsbad in Lea and Eddy Counties, New Mexico)

Description: Results of this study indicates that the Salado Salt is composed primarily of fine to coarse-grained halite with polyhalite, anhydrite, and clay minerals. Other minerals detected in small amounts include gypsum, magnesite, quartz, feldspar, sylvite, carnallite, celestite(question), glauconite, and kainite(question). Petrographic evidence (hopper crystals, and intergrowth of halite with other minerals) indicate that the Salado Salt was deposited in rather shallow water and may have been exposed … more

Continuum Theory of Ductile Rupture by Void Nucleation and Growth. Part I. Yield Criteria and Flow Rules for Porous Ductile Media

Description: Widely used constitutive laws for engineering materials assume plastic incompressibility and no effect on yield of the hydrostatic component of stress. However, void nucleation and growth (and thus bulk dilatancy) are commonly observed in some processes which are characterized by large local plastic flow, such as ductile fracture. The purpose of this work is to develop approximate yield criteria and flow rules for porous (dilatant) ductile materials, showing the role of hydrostatic stress in pl… more

Creep analysis of structures using a new equation of state type constitutive relation

Description: A computational scheme is presented for the analysis of a certain class of problems involving creep of metals at elevated temperatures. The high temperature nonelastic behavior of materials is assumed to obey a new mechanical equation of state type constitutive relation recently proposed by Hart. As an illustration, the problem of creep of a closed-ended thick-walled cylinder under internal and external pressures is analyzed employing the proposed computational scheme and Hart's equation of sta… more

Solar silicon definition. Progress report, 15 October 1974--15 September 1975

Description: This project was conducted to determine the optimum silicon quality for cost-effective solar cells suitable for large-scale terrestrial utilization. The effects of selected impurities upon the solar cell performance were investigated by preparation and characterization of a matrix of silicon samples. Evaluation of the I-V curves to obtain the slope of the forward current of simple p-n junctions provided rapid material evaluation. Experimental techniques were demonstrated for achieving reliable … more

Theory of RBE. Third triennial report, 1 January 1967--31 December 1975. [Model based on tracks of heavy ions in nuclear emulsions]

Description: From a single set of themes, the theory of RBE has developed a picture of the response of many biological, physical, and chemical systems to radiations of different quality, that depends on a model of the structure of the tracks of nuclear projectiles in condensed matter. Its characterizations arise from the tracks of heavy ions in nuclear emulsions, as extended to accommodate biological cells. Most recently emulsions have been identified whose radiosensitivity changes with radiation quality pa… more

Electrical utility generating system reliability analysis code, SYSREL. Social cost studies program

Description: The system reliability code, SYSREL, is a system planning tool that can be used to assess the reliability and economic performance of alternative expansion patterns of electric utility generation systems. Given input information such as capacity, forced-outage rate, number of weeks of annual scheduled maintenance, and economic data for individual units along with the expected load characteristics, the code produces estimates of the mean time between system failures, required reserve capacity to… more

Safety aspects of advanced fuels irradiations in EBR-II. [UC; UN; PuC; PuN]

Description: Basic safety questions such as MFCI, loss-of-Na bond, pin behavior during design basis transients, and failure propagation were evaluated as they pertain to advanced fuels in EBR-II. With the exception of pin response to the unlikely loss-of-flow transient, the study indicates that irradiation of significant numbers of advanced fueled subassemblies in EBR-II should pose no safety problems. The analysis predicts, however, that Na boiling may occur during the postulated design basis unlikely loss… more

Decomposition of HNS in DMF. Progress report, July--September 1975

Description: Progress during July to October 1975 in research on chemical explosives is reported. Three batches of HNS containing various amounts of DPE and TNB were heated in DMF for seven hours at 100, 120 and 148/sup 0/C. Samples were withdrawn periodically and the relative percentages of the three constituents were determined by liquid chromatography. At 100 and 120/sup 0/C the relative percentage of HNS increased with time while the others diminished. At 148/sup 0/C the opposite was observed. An additi… more

The Marysville, Montana Geothermal Project. Final Report

Description: This report describes the exploration of an anomalous site near Marysville, Montana, where the geothermal heat flow is about 10 times the regional average. The site arouses scientific interest because there are no surface manifestations such as young volcanics, hot springs, geysers, etc., within 20 miles of it. Also, there is significant economic interest in exploring the source of heat as a potential for the generation of electricity. Included herein are independent sections prepared by each c… more

Survey of sampling techniques for defining respirable concentration and/or particle-size characteristics of aerosols

Description: A survey has been made of aerosol sampling procedures used by selected ERDA contractors. Of those responding to a questionnaire, approximately half performed respirable-dust sampling or aerosol size analysis. The wide variation in sampling devices, calibration methods, and data handling techniques indicates the need for standardization of aerosol sampling techniques. Results of the survey will be used in the forthcoming Manual of Recommended Practice for Aerosol Sampling and Evaluation, to be p… more

TATB performance and sensitivity. Progress report, July--September 1975

Description: Progress during July to October 1975 in research on chemical explosives is reported. Gap tests conducted on three batches of Teledyne-produced TATB revealed a wide sensitivity range. Impurities are probably responsible for the variation. LLL Blend 6 was tested at three densities to provide a check on the data for LLL Blend 2. Blend 6 was slightly more sensitive than Blend 2. Routine tests of RX-03-BB Blends 6 and 7 revealed nothing unusual. Better results were obtained in the hot (68 C) wedge t… more
