Multiwire proportional chambers in M1 and M3 spectrometers of charmed baryon experiment (E781) at Fermilab

Description: The status of the multiwire proportional chambers in the FERMILAB E781 experiment and a general description of the readout system are given. This essay will describe the system of multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) that are part of the Fermilab experiment E781 setup. Multiwire proportional chambers are often used in particle physics experiments because they can determine the position of charged particles very accurately (less than a millimeter). The E781 experiment which is also called SELE… more

Large experiment data analysis collaboration. Annual progress report for period November 15, 1996 - November 14, 1997

Description: This is the second annual progress on the three-year Large Experiment Data Analysis Collaboration DOE grant DE-FGO2-92ER54139, which succeeded a previous four-year grant under the same grant number. This year most of the collaboration effort shifted from being with the TFTR program, to being with the DIII-D program, and most new research focused on the properties, causes and possible amelioration of neoclassical tearing modes. In addition, our studies of nonlocal electron heat transport in TFTR… more

Ultrafast measurements of chlorine dioxide photochemistry

Description: Time-resolved mass spectrometry and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are used to study the ultrafast photodissociation dynamics of chlorine dioxide, an important constituent in stratospheric ozone depletion. Chapter 1 introduces these pump/probe techniques, in which a femtosecond pump pulse excites a molecule to a dissociative state. At a later time, a second femtosecond probe pulse ionizes the molecule. The resulting mass and photoelectron spectra are acquired as a function of the dela… more

Subtask 2.7 -- Mercury capture on solid surfaces and aerosols. Semi-annual report, July 1--December 31, 1996

Description: Determining the fly ash properties responsible for the capture of mercury in coal-fired power generation systems is key to understanding and controlling mercury emissions in these systems. Several capture mechanisms and interactions may be possible, such as condensation, chemical adsorption, physical adsorption, chemical bonding, and amalgamation. The chemical nature of the exposed surfaces and the amount of surface area are likely to affect the amount of mercury capture, so both of these param… more

Ammonium attenuation in aquifer material impacted with high levels of organic wastes. Final report

Description: Total concentrations of ammonium (NH{sub 4}{sup +1}) have been found to exceed the State of Wyoming ground water quality standard for Class 1 aquifers near Torrington, Wyoming. The cause of the NH{sub 4}{sup +1} contamination is thought to be associated with fertilizer use and/or the leaching of organics into the ground water from impoundments holding wastes from sugar beet processing. This type of contamination could be expected from other industrial processes, including those associated with … more

Immobilization of chloride-rich radioactive wastes produced by pyrochemical operations

Description: A a result of its former role as a producer of nuclear weapons components, the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS), Golden, Colorado accumulated a variety of plutonium-contaminated materials. When the level of contamination exceeded a predetermined level (the economic discard limit), the materials were classified as residues rather than waste and were stored for later recovery of the plutonium. Although large quantities of residues were processed, others, primarily those more diff… more

Data analysis for surface plate calibration

Description: A surface plate is used to establish a reference plane used for making precision dimensional measurements. Ideally, the surface should be perfectly flat. Since it is impossible to create a perfectly flat surface, surface plate are calibrated to determine how much they deviate from a perfectly flat surface. Once a surface plate is calibrated, the user can determine if the plate is flat enough for use in a particular application. The currently accepted method of data analysis for surface plate ca… more
