Characteristics of loads in rough air at transonic speeds of rocket-powered models of a canard and a conventional-tail configuration

Description: Report presenting results from flight tests at transonic speeds for a canard and a conventional-tail rocket-powered model in continuous rough air. The use of an airspeed-fluctuation instrument for measuring the turbulence intensity experienced is described as well as the resulting improvement in the technique of testing rocket models in rough air. The short-period frequency was dominant in the center-of-gravity normal-acceleration response for both models.

Chemical Stability of Purex and Uranium Recovery Process Solvent

Description: The desirability of operating the Purex columns at higher temperatures, 50 to 70 deg C, made it necessary to obtain data on the stabiliyy of solverts at these higher temperatures. Since the present diluent will not be entirely safe at the upper temperature limit, a number of diluents with higher flash points were investigated. (J. E. D.)

A DIFFUSION CLOUD CHAMBER STUDY OF VERY SLOW MESONS. II. BETA DECAY OF THE MUON

Description: The spectrum of electrons arising from the decay of the negative mu meson has been determined. The muons are arrested in the gas of a high pressure hydrogen filled diffusion cloud chamber. The momenta of the decay electrons are determined from their curvature in a magnetic field of 7750 gauss. The spectrum of 415 electrons has been analyzed according to the theory of Michel. The shape parameter, {rho}, is found to be 0.64 {plus_minus} .10. The significance of this result in terms of the beta in… more

End Seals for "Cored" Slugs

Description: As potentially suitable alternate methods of installing closure plugs in cored slugs, four different schemes were considered. One of these schemes, whereby a flat chamfered uranium disc is crimped into a counterbored recess at each end of the bare slug after pickling, was developed to a workable state, and partially evaluated prior to reassignment of the job to another group. From the results of initial evaluation tests, this process appears to provide leak-free core closures and offers economi… more

Gold Alloys as Process-Solution-Lubricated Sleeve Bearings

Description: Ten materials in which gold was alloyed with copper, silver, graphite, platinum, nickel or zinc (compositions given in Table 1) were evaluated in this study. Corrosion tests to determine the resistance of the alloys to boiling 60 to 65% nitric acid showed that with the exception of an alloy containing 51 wt % gold and 49 wt % graphite (Gold Graphalloy 811) which dissolved in 48 hr and an alloy containing 90 wt % gold and 10 wt % graphite which lost 2.3 wt % in 240 hr the alloys were essentiall… more

The Hydrodynamic Force Characteristics of Streamline Bodies of Revolution Having Fineness Ratios of 6, 9, and 12 With and Without Chine Strips

Description: Report presenting hydrodynamic force characteristic for three streamline bodies of revolution equipped with chine strips and with fineness ratios of 6, 9, and 12. Testing was also performed on the bodies with the chine strips removed and with the tail cones removed. Hydrodynamic resistance, pitching moment, wetted length, and height of the model above the water surface for a range of trim, load, and speed are provided.

Low-speed wind-tunnel investigation of leading-edge porous suction on a 4-percent-thick 60 degree delta wing

Description: Report presenting testing of a 60-degree delta-wing-fuselage model with a 4-percent-thick airfoil section with large leading-edge radius in the 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine the effectiveness of porous-leading-edge suction in delaying and reducing the leading-edge separation and accompanying high drag. Results regarding the delta wing, including pump power, lift, pitching moment, pressure distributions, the clipped wing, and some comments on the application of leading-edge suction to del… more

Model investigation of the effect of mounting hydro-skis on shock absorbers

Description: Report presenting a rough-water landing investigation of a model of a hydro-ski seaplane design to determine the effect on the landing motions and vertical accelerations of mounting the hydro-ski on shock-absorber struts. The tests occurred at one landing trim and wave height over a range of wave length for three hydro-ski configurations. Results regarding the landings, effect of artificial stabilization, damping in trim, and reductions in vertical accelerations are provided.
