Aerial radiometric and magnetic survey, San Angelo National Topographic Map: Texas, West Texas Project. Final report

Description: The results of analyses of the airborne gamma radiation and total magnetic field survey flown for the region identified as the San Angelo National Topographic Map NH14-1 are presented. The airborne data gathered are reduced by ground computer facilities to yield profile plots of the basic uranium, thorium, and potassium equivalent gamma radiation intensities, ratios of these intensities, aircraft altitude above the earth's surface, total gamma ray and earth's magnetic field intensity, correlate… more

Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Nashville quadrangle, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Final report

Description: The Nashville quadrangle covers a portion of the interior lowland plateau region of the Midwestern Physiographic Province. The quadrangle contains a shallow to moderately thick Paleozoic section that overlies a Precambrian basement complex. Paleozoic carbonates dominate surficial exposures. A search of available literature revealed no known uranium deposits. Fifty-five uranium anomalies were detected and are discussed briefly. Most anomalies appear to relate to cultural features. Some have rela… more

Environmental assessment for the Satellite Power System (SPS) Concept Development and Evaluation Program (CDEP). [Microwave and non-microwave health and ecological assessment]

Description: In the satellite power system (SPS), satellites in geosynchronous earth orbit would collect solar energy in space, convert it to microwaves, and transmit the microwaves to receiving antennas (rectennas) on earth. At the rectennas, the microwave energy would be converted to electricity. This SPS environmental assessment considers the microwave and nonmicrowave effects on the terrestrial environment and human health, atmospheric effects, and effects on electromagnetic systems. No environmental pr… more

Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Fort Smith quadrangle, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Final report

Description: The Fort Smith quadrangle in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma overlies thick Paleozoic sediments of the Arkoma Basin. These Paleozoics dominate surface exposure except where covered by Quaternary Alluvial materials. Examination of available literature shows no known uranium deposits (or occurrences) within the quadrangle. Seventy-five groups of uranium samples were defined as anomalies and are discussed briefly. None were considered significant, and most appeared to be of cultural origin. … more

Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Helena quadrangle of Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. Final report

Description: The Helena quadrangle covers a region largely within the Mississippi River flood plain in the extreme northern Gulf Coastal Province. Tertiary sediments in this area are relatively thick, and overlie a Paleozoic basin gradually shoaling to the northeast. The Oachita Tectonic Zone strikes southeasterly through the center of the quadrangle. The exposed sequence is almost entirely Quaternary sediments of the flood plain area. Older Cenozoic deposits crop out in upland areas on the west side of the… more

A SUMMARY OF INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS IN USAEC FACILITIES

Description: The accident experience of the AEC contractor operation for 1959 and 1960 is reported. Incidents involving radio active materials are described. A table of inadvertent criticality was included to supplement other tables. A tabulation of exposure records at values from 0 to 15 r is given. (M.C.G.)

Gravity survey of the Escalante Desert and vicinity, in Iron and Washington Counties, Utah

Description: During the summers of 1978 and 1979, a total of 436 new gravity stations were taken in the southern part of the Escalante Desert and vicinity in Iron and Washington counties, Utah. The new stations were combined with 917 other stations taken in previous surveys, and a total of 1353 stations were used in this study, covering an area of about 2700 mi/sup 2/ (7000 km/sup 2/). The purpose of the study was to help evaluate the potential of geothermal resources within the survey area, which includes … more

Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Tupelo quadrangle, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. Final report

Description: The Tupelo quadrangle covers a region immediately east of the Mississippi River flood plain in the northernmost Gulf Coastal Physiographic Province. Sediments of Teritary and Paleozoic basins shoal eastward. Tertiary exposures dominate the western half of the quadrangle. Cretaceous strata are exposed over most of the eastern half. A search of available literature revealed no known uranium deposits. A total of eighty-six uranium anomalies were detected and are discussed briefly. Few were conside… more

Technical-economic assessment of the production of methanol from biomass. Executive summary. Final research report

Description: The results are presented of a comprehensive systems study which assessed the engineering and economic feasibilities of the production of methanol from biomass utilizing existing technology. The three major components of the biomass to methanol system assessed are the availability of biomass feedstocks, the thermochemical conversion of biomass to methanol fuels, and the distribution and markets for methanol fuels. The results of this study show that methanol fuel can be produced from biomass us… more

Effects of Temperature on Mechanical Properties of Normal Uranium Dingot

Description: Fatigue properties of normal uranium dingot for rotating beam specimens between 150 and 600 deg C are shown as S-N diagrams and are also given by an empirical equation of the form S = bN/sub m/, where S is the stress, N the number of cycIes, and b and m temperature dependent parameters. Tensile properties for temperatures ranging from 30 to 700 deg C are presented in tabular form and as stress-strain diagrams. All of the properties were found to decrease in value with increasing temperature exc… more

CALCULATIONS OF THE DOPPLER COEFFICIENT OF LARGE CERAMIC-FUELED FAST REACTORS

Description: ABS>Calculations of the Doppler coefficient of large, ceramicfueled fast reactors containing plutonium were made by means of the ELMOE program to provide accurate flux calculations. The temperature-dependent cross sections of P. Greebler et al., for U/sup 238/ and Pu/sup 239/ were used. Doppler coefficients of the order of 10/sup -5/ ntermediate tem k/ C were obtained, in agreement with Greebler's results. Coefficients of carbide fueled reactors are about 0.7 of those of oxide-fueled reactors a… more

Radiological survey of the radioactive sands and residues at Lowman, Idaho

Description: No uranium ore milling was performed at the Lowman site, which is located approximately 0.8 km northeast of the town of Lowman, Idaho. Nevertheless, approximately 80,000 metric tons of radioactive sands and residues from upgrading of heavy minerals by physical processing methods remain on the site grounds. Measurements of external gamma radiation 1 m above the surface showed exposure rates up to 2.4 mR/hr on site, but the exposure rate off site quickly dropped to the background level in all dir… more
