Shelf-sea ecosystems

Description: An analysis of the food chain dynamics of the Oregon, Alaskan, and New York shelves is made with respect to differences in physical forcing of these ecosystems. The world's shelves are 10% of the area of the ocean, yield 99% of the world's fish catch, and may be a major sink in the global CO/sub 2/ budget.

Hydrographic Observations Off Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia, March, May and September 1977 and January 1978

Description: Seasonal onshore-offshore sections were run in March, May and September 1977 and January 1978 off Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia. In each instance upwelling was observed at the shelf break with significant nutrient fluxes into the surface and/or shelf waters. There are indications that eddies may have been responsible for some of these observations.

Influence of faults on groundwater flow and transport at YuccaMountain, Nevada

Description: Numerical simulations of groundwater flow at Yucca Mountain, Nevada are used to investigate how faults influence groundwater flow pathways and regional-scale macrodispersion. The 3-D model has a unique grid block discretization that facilitates the accurate representation of the complex geologic structure present in faulted formations. Each hydrogeologic layer is discretized into a single layer of irregular and dipping grid blocks, and faults are discretized such that they are laterally continu… more

Geothermal Modeling of the Raft River Geothermal Field

Description: This interim report presents the results to date of chemical modeling of the Raft River KGRA. Earlier work indicated a northwest-southeast anomaly in the contours. Modeling techniques applied to more complete data allowed further definition of the anomaly. Models described in this report show the source of various minerals in the geothermal water. There appears to be a regional heat source that gives rise to uniform conductive heat flow in the region, but convective flow is concentrated near th… more

Anthropogenically-Induced Climate Change: Final Report

Description: Paper number 1 addresses the fact that the procedure used in the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment for identifying the presence of clouds over snow/ice surfaces is known to have shortcomings, and this is corroborated through use of surface insolation measurements at the South Pole as an independent means of identifying clouds. These surface insolation measurements are then used to validate the more detailed cloud identification scheme used in the follow-up Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy … more

Secondary production in waters influenced by upwelling off the coast of Somalia

Description: During the southwest monsoon of 1979, plankton samples were collected between the equator and 12{degrees}N. Surface samples collected while the research vessel was surveying this area have been analyzed for the abundance of copepod nauplii, primarily the young of the copepod Calanoides carinatus. These samples revealed a sharp rise in the abundance of nauplii in regions where sea-surface temperatures were less than 10{degrees}C. The development state of the gonads of female C. carinatus also sh… more

Biological consequences of environmental changes related to coastal upwelling: a simulation study

Description: Two simulation models of marine ecosystem dynamics are formulated and applied to field data. The first is a time-dependent model of phytoplankton growth in nutrient-enriched batch cultures where spatial gradients of dependent variables and the effects of higher tropic level processes are not included. Rates of photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, chlorophyll synthesis and cell division for a single phytoplankton functional group are simulated as functions of photosynthetically active solar radiatio… more

Bomb radiocarbon sections along the Hawaii-Tahiti shuttle track. Annual progress report

Description: The objective of the research is to use the temporal and spatial distribution of the transient, bomb-produced /sup 14/C in the equatorial Pacific Ocean to determine mixing rates in the upper 1000 m of the ocean. To accomplish this goal approximately 400 /sup 14/C samples were collected during two legs of the NORPAX shuttle. There is extensive relative depletion in /sup 14/C of the equatorial surface waters. This feature of the surface water /sup 14/C distribution, coupled with the depth distrib… more

Steady-state and transient modeling of tracer and nutrient distributions in the global ocean. Progress report, August 1, 1993--July 31, 1994

Description: We have completed the studies using the inorganic carbon cycle in the zonally averaged ocean circulation model to calculate anthropogenic uptake of CO, and bomb radiocarbon. While our results are in broad agreement with previous studies, we have learned that horizontal mixing processes due to gyre circulation are important for transient tracer experiments over a few decades. These findings are in press. Using the inorganic carbon cycle model we have started to look at the distributions of {delt… more
