The Electrical Resistivity of Molten and Solid Thorium-Magnesium Eutetic

Description: Electrical resistivity properties of polycrystalline 39 wt % thorium-- magnesium eutectic are reported for the solid from room temperature to its melting point at 589 deg C and as a liquid from its melting point to 900 deg C. The electrical resistivity of the eutectic at the melting point was 69.5 microhm- centimeters; it decreased to a value of 64.8 microhm-centimeters at 900 C. Tantalum tubing was used to contain the alloy in the molten state. (auth)

Oxidation/gasification of carbon residue on retorted oil shale. Final report

Description: Studies of the oxidation and gasification of oil shale char were extended to an investigation of the effects of mineral catalysis. Six shales with differing mineral compositions were studied, including samples from the saline zone in the Western Colorado and from the Antrim shales of Michigan. Oxidation kinetics data, corrected for mass transfer effects, were compared for all six samples. A high assay shale from Utah and a sample from the saline zone were found to have the highest oxidation rat… more

Removal of silica from Raft River geothermal water

Description: Lack of sufficient quantities of clean surface or near-surface water at Raft River for cooling purposes dictates that cooled geothermal fluid, effluent from the Raft River 5 MW(e) Pilot Power Plant, must also be used as condenser coolant. Prior testing revealed that a water-treatment system would be required to reduce silica and calcium concentrations of the cooling fluid. The water-treatment system specified was to use dolomitic lime for both pH adjustment and source of magnesium. The dolomiti… more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, May 1961

Description: The experimental results on the oxidation of H from a He stream with CuO pellets were very close to the predicted behavior based on the mathematical model. Experimental measurements of uranyl sulfate loading rates on chloride equilibrated resin showed little variation with solution concentrations. A tentative flowsbeet was proposed for cost analysis of processing a Pebble Bed Reactor. A U-Zr plate was dissolved in nitrate-free Zirflex solution. An authentic TRIGA prototype was processed in engi… more

Improved ceramic heat exchanger material

Description: Various ceramic materials in the form of small, monolithic bars were screened as candidate materials in heat exchanger structures for automotive gas turbine engines. The material finally selected consists of 60 w/o* petalite (LAS) and 40 w/o of a recrystallizable glass which converts during thermal processing to cordierite (MAS). This new material, GE-3200, was fabricated by Coors Porcelain Company into a circular honeycomb structure 53.3 cm diameter and 10.2 cm thick (21'' x 4'') and having 69… more

LOADING AND ELUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC ZEOLITES

Description: The cation exchange characteristics of several commercially available zeolites were evaluated, Equilibrium loading characteristics and exchange capacities were determined experimentally in the binary systems cesium-lithium, cesium-- sodium, cesium--potassium, cesium-Tubidium, cesium -- hydrogen, cesium-- ammonium, strontium-- magnesium, strontium-- calcium, strontium-- barium, and strontium-- hydrogen for several zeolites. Exchangeable cation fractions in the equilibrium solutions were varied f… more

Effect of cation exchange on the subsequent reactivity of lignite chars to steam. [108 references]

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the role which cations in coal play in the subsequent reactivity of chars. It is hoped that this investigation will aid in an understanding of the catalytic nature of inorganic constituents in coal during its gasification. It was found that increased heat treatment temperature decreased reactivity. The decrease in reactivity was shown to be due, at least in part, to the changes in the nature of the cation with increased heat treatment temperatur… more

HEAD-END TREATMENT OF LOW LEVEL WASTES PRIOR TO FOAM SEPARATION

Description: Calcium-magnesium precipitation apparatus was used to reduce the concentrations of these elements in ORNL tap water, used as a substitute for waste water of low level of radioactivity, prior to strontium removal by foam separation. With and without alkali and flocculator chambers and with a stirred sludge of ratio height to diameter equal to 1/1 to ~4/1, use of 5 x 10/sup -3/ M each of NaOH and Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ and 2 ppm Fe/sup 3+/ reduced the dissolved Ca + Mg concentrations to 1 to 2 ppm as… more

Array automated assembly: Phase 2. Quarterly report

Description: An analysis was made of cost trade-offs for shaping modified square wafers from cylindrical crystals. For reasonably expectable silicon and sheet costs, the optimum shape will be nearer a circle than a square. Tests were conducted of the effectiveness of texture etching for removal of surface damage on sawed wafers. Four glass systems have survived preliminary screening tests for use as edge masking dielectrics. These include beta-spodumen, MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ borosilicate, baria and titania … more

Time and space dependency of radiative transfer in magnesium

Description: Radiative transfer in a magnesium vapor has been studied. The experimental cell was designed to provide stable density measurements with a ..delta..lambda/sup -2/ variation with respect to the magnesium resonance line, which indicated pure Rayleigh scattering and no evidence of impurities. Total intensity measurements show the radiation field to be highly anisotropic, although somewhat less at late times. 8 refs., 7 figs. (WRF).

MAP3S precipitation chemistry network. Third periodic summary report, July 1978-December 1979

Description: The MAP3S Precipitation Chemistry Network consists of eight collection sites in the northeastern United States. Precipitation event samples are collected by cooperating site operators, using specially developed sampling equipment. In this, the third periodic summary report, are listed field and concentration data for the period July 1, 1978 to December 31, 1979. Over three years' samples have been collected at most of the sites, which went into operation between September 1976 and October 1978.… more

The magnesium chelation step in chlorophyll biosynthesis

Description: The biogenesis of energy transducing membranes requires the coordinate synthesis of prosthetic groups, proteins and lipids. Two of the major prosthetic groups, chlorophyll and heme, share a common biosynthetic pathway that diverges at the point of metal insertion into protoporphyrin IX. Insertion of iron leads to heme, while insertion of magnesium leads to chlorophyll. The Mg-chelatase from intact cucumber chloroplasts has been characterized with regard to substrate specificity, regulation, ATP… more
