Measurement of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ in Semileptonic nu Fe and anti nu Fe Interactions

Description: We report results from neutral current scattering of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos on iron nuclei by the CCFRR experiment at Fermilab. Our objective is the measurement of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ from inclusive semileptonic neutrino-nucleon interactions. Such a measurement, even though it is subject to more corrections than the analogous measurement in neutrino-electron scattering (e.g. due to the presence of a strange quark sea in the nucleon), has a high degree of statistical accuracy and ma… more

Versatile secondary beam for the meson area

Description: A new secondary beam design is outlined for the Meson M6 Beamline that combines versatility with economy. The beamline described will transport charged particles of either sign to 800 GeV/c and bring the beam to a focus in one of three potential experimental areas. The plan makes maximal use of existing civil construction.

Photon Dose Rate From Induced Activity in the Beam Stop of a 400 GeV Proton Accelerator

Description: Calculated results are presented of the photon dose rate from the induced activity produced in the beam stop of a high-energy proton accelerator. Incident proton energies of 400 GeV, 200 GeV, and 30 GeV are considered. In each case the photon dose rate is given as a function of radius in the beam stop and as a function of time after the beam is turned off for assumed operating times of 90 days and 10 years.

Cerenkov counters at ISABELLE

Description: Particle mass identification capability will be very important for much of the physics at ISABELLE. It will be required for studying quantum number flow in quark--quark scattering (jet and high P/sub t/ physics), hadronic decays of W's and Z's, and ''onium'' states. It will be essential for detecting and studying ''naked flavor'' states and generally required or at least very useful for most hadronic physics at ISABELLE. The large all-purpose detectors envisioned for ISABELLE require particle i… more

Measurement of high-p/sub T/ correlations in 340-GeV/c pp and 280-GeV/c. pi. /sup -/p reactions

Description: We have measured correlations between single high-p/sub T/ (1.5 < p/sub T/ < 3.5 GeV/c) trigger particles on one side of the beam line and groups of particles entering a calorimeter on the opposite side of the beam line. The mean transverse momentum measured in the calorimeter is found to increase with the trigger-particle transverse momentum. The coplanarity of the events increases with trigger-particle transferse momentum. We have compared our data to the predictions of a phenomenological fou… more

Wide-band neutrino beams at 1000 GeV

Description: In a previous publication, S. Mori discussed various broad-band neutrino and antineutrino beams using 1000 GeV protons on target. A new beam (SST) has been designed which provides the same neutrino flux as the quadrupole triplet (QT) while suppressing the wrong sign flux by a factor of 18. It also provides more than twice as much high energy antineutrino flux than the sign-selected bare target (SSBT) and in addition, has better neutrino suppression. While it is possible to increase the flux obt… more

Energy Saver A-Sector Power Test Results

Description: The superconducting magnets and associated cryogenic components in A-sector represent the initial phase of installation of the Fermilab superconducting accelerator, designed to accelerate proton beams to energies of 1 TeV. Installation of the magnets, comprising one-eighth of the ring, was completed in December, 1981. Cooldown and power tests took place in the first half of 1982, concurrent with main ring use for 400 GeV high energy physics. The tests described in this paper involved 151 cryoge… more

Heavy quark production by neutrinos and antineutrinos. [Quark-parton model, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group, 200 GeV]

Description: The rate for producing t- and b-quarks in, respectively, neutrino and antineutrino interactions with nucleons are estimated. Experimental quark parton distribution functions, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group mixing angles, and threshold suppression through rescaling are used in the calculation. The ratios to total cross sections of b-quark production by anti nu, R/sub b//sup anti nu/, and t-quark production by ..nu.., R/sub t//sup nu/, are, respectively, R/sub b//sup anti nu/ approximately equa… more

Production of neutrinos and neutrino-like particles in proton-nucleus interactions. [400 GeV, cross sections]

Description: An experimental search was performed to look for the direct production of neutrinos or neutrino-like particles, i.e., neutral particles which interact weakly with hadrons, in proton-nucleus interactions at 400 GeV incident proton energy. Possible sources of such particles include the semi-leptonic decay of new heavy particles such as charm, and the direct production of a light neutral Higgs particle such as the axion. The production of these particles has been inferred in this experiment by ene… more

Muon scattering into 1 to 5 muon final states. [90 to 209 MeV]

Description: Interactions of 209- and 90-GeV muons within a magnetized-steel calorimeter have produced final states containing one, two, three, four, and five muons. Redundant systems of proportional and drift chambers, fully sensitive in the forward direction, maintained 9% dimuon-mass resolution and high acceptance for multimuon final states. The first data are presented on F/sub 2/(x, Q/sup 2/) from charged lepton-nucleon scattering spanning a range in ln (ln, Q/sup 2/) comparable to that measured in hig… more

Muon fluence measurements at 800 GeV

Description: Muon fluence (muons-cm/sup -2/) was measured downstream of enclosure PW8 at three locations along the extension of the PW beamline during the 1984 800-GeV accelerator run. The main goal of these measurements was to determine muon dose-equivalent at various Fermilab locations, and to obtain an estimate of the yearly off-site radiation exposure to the general population due to accelerator-produced muons. The contribution from the PW beamline was investigated because the targeted primary proton be… more

Photodisintegration of the deuteron with polarized photons from LEGS

Description: An experiment is described which will measure the d(..gamma..,p) reaction with polarized photon beams from LEGS ranging in energy from 50 MeV to 530 MeV. The data will yield a new high-resolution high-statistics determination of the total unpolarized cross section, will isolate for the first time the polarization dependent part of the reaction, and will measure the photon-beam asymmetry with much higher resolution and accuracy than available from existing data. These will provide one of the mos… more

Measurement of the nucleon structure function using high energy muons

Description: We have measured the inclusive deep inelastic scattering of muons on nucleons in iron using beams of 93 and 215 GeV muons. To perform this measurement, we have built and operated the Multimuon Spectrometer (MMS) in the muon beam at Fermilab. The MMS is a magnetized iron target/spectrometer/calorimeter which provides 5.61 kg/cm/sup 2/ of target, 9% momentum resolution on scattered muons, and a direct measure of total hadronic energy with resolution sigma/sub nu/ = 1.4..sqrt..nu(GeV). Multiplicity Distributions in νμp Interactions

Description: Multiplicity distributions of the hadrons produced in antineutrino proton interactions are presented. The data sample, which consists of 2025 charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 5 GeV, comes from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the broad-band antineutrino beam at Fermilab. The distribution in hadronic mass W has an average value of 3.7 GeV but extends up to 10 GeV. The mean multiplicity of charged hadrons depends on the hadronic mass W and varies as … more
