Experiments with vacuum interrupters used for large dc-current interruption

Description: Vacuum interrupters have been tested in circuits similar to those used in theta-pinch and Tokamak fusion devices. The effects on performance of auxiliary circuit components and axial magnetic fields have been determined, and limits to lifetime caused by mechanical and electrical wear have been measured. Results show that the upper reliable limit of interruption is independent of the auxiliary components but quite dependent on interrupter size and on the axial field.

Development of a Novel Bi-Directional Isolated Multiple-Input DC-DC Converter

Description: There is vital need for a compact, lightweight, and efficient energy-storage system that is both affordable and has an acceptable cycle life for the large-scale production of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Most of the current research employs a battery-storage unit (BU) combined with a fuel cell (FC) stack in order to achieve the operating voltage-current point of maximum efficiency for the FC system. A system block diagram is shown in Fig.1.1. In such a convention… more

16,000-rpm Interior Permanent Magnet Reluctance Machine with Brushless Field Excitation

Description: The reluctance interior permanent magnet (RIPM) motor is currently used by many leading auto manufacturers for hybrid vehicles. The power density for this type of motor is high compared with that of induction motors and switched reluctance motors. The primary drawback of the RIPM motor is the permanent magnet (PM) because during high-speed operation, the fixed PM produces a huge back electromotive force (emf) that must be reduced before the current will pass through the stator windings. This re… more

Early counterpulse technique applied to vacuum interrupters

Description: Interruption of dc currents using counterpulse techniques is investigated with vacuum interrupters and a novel approach in which the counterpulse is applied before contact separation. Important increases have been achieved in this way in the maximum interruptible current as well as large reductions in contact erosion. The factors establishing these new limits are presented and ways are discussed to make further improvements.

Impact of quasi-dc currents on three-phase distribution transformer installations. Power Systems Technology Program

Description: This report summarizes a series of tests designed to determine the response of quasi-dc currents on three-phase power distribution transformers for electric power systems. In general, if the dc injection is limited to the primary side of a step-down transformer, significant harmonic distortion is noted and an increase in the reactive power demand results. For dc injection on the secondary (load) side of the step-down transformer the harmonic content at the secondary side is quite high and satur… more

A Reversing Logarithmic DC Amplifier

Description: Purpose: Automatic recording equipment was designed for use with a high temperature Sykes experiment in which calorimetric measurements were to be made to temperatures approaching 2000* C. At such high temperatures, radiation becomes the dominant mechanism for heat transfer. The temperature differences which are used to determine the magnitude of this transfer no longer are directly proportional to it, but must be related by the Stefan-Boltzman law of radiation.

Ground detector for a floating, high current dc system. [3. 6 MW dc resistance heater test loop in Heat Transfer Lab of Savannah River Lab]

Description: An instrument is described for detection of electrical grounding of the 3.6 megawatt dc test loop in the Heat Transfer Laboratory of the Savannah River Laboratory. The dc loop is ungrounded except for leakage through cooling water in the buses and loads. A high-frequency, low-voltage signal is applied to the positive dc bus. A tuned amplifier receives the signal from the negative bus. Loss of the received signal indicates a ground at either bus or at the load. Alarm and shutdown circuits are ac… more

Effects on Freshwater Organisms of Magnetic Fields Associated with Hydrokinetic Turbines

Description: Underwater cables will be used to transmit electricity between turbines in an array (interturbine cables), between the array and a submerged step-up transformer (if part of the design), and from the transformer or array to shore. All types of electrical transmitting cables (as well as the generator itself) will emit EMF into the surrounding water. The electric current will induce magnetic fields in the immediate vicinity, which may affect the behavior or viability of animals. Because direct ele… more

Report on dc soundings over a geothermal prospect in the Bruneau-Grand View area, Idaho

Description: The d-c sounding survey confirms the presence of a large conductive section of sedimentary and volcanic rocks underlying the low-resistivity AMT anomaly defined by Hoover. Within the conductive section, resistivity boundaries between sedimentary rocks of the Idaho Group, the Banbury Basalt, and Idavada Volcanics appear to be entirely obscured, at least where well data are available. True resistivities near these contacts range from about 3 to 5.5 ohm-m, about 3 to 10 times less than would be ex… more

Ground-Source Integrated Heat Pump for Near-Zero Energy Houses: Technology Status Report

Description: The energy service needs of a net-zero-energy house (ZEH) include space heating and cooling, water heating, ventilation, dehumidification, and humidification, depending on the requirements of the specific location. These requirements differ in significant ways from those of current housing. For instance, the most recent DOE buildings energy data (DOE/BED 2007) indicate that on average {approx}43% of residential buildings primary energy use is for space heating and cooling, vs. {approx}12% for w… more

Laboratory Studies of the Effects of Static and Variable Magnetic Fields on Freshwater Fish

Description: There is considerable interest in the development of marine and hydrokinetic energy projects in rivers, estuaries, and coastal ocean waters of the United States. Hydrokinetic (HK) technologies convert the energy of moving water in river or tidal currents into electricity, without the impacts of dams and impoundments associated with conventional hydropower or the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) maintains a database that displays the geog… more

Advanced Modular Inverter Technology Development

Description: Electric and hybrid-electric vehicle systems require an inverter to convert the direct current (DC) output of the energy generation/storage system (engine, fuel cells, or batteries) to the alternating current (AC) that vehicle propulsion motors use. Vehicle support systems, such as lights and air conditioning, also use the inverter AC output. Distributed energy systems require an inverter to provide the high quality AC output that energy system customers demand. Today's inverters are expensive … more

Emerging Two-Phase Cooling Technologies for Power Electronic Inverters

Description: In order to meet the Department of Energy's (DOE's) FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies (FVCT) goals for volume, weight, efficiency, reliability, and cost, the cooling of the power electronic devices, traction motors, and generators is critical. Currently the power electronic devices, traction motors, and generators in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are primarily cooled by water-ethylene glycol (WEG) mixture. The cooling fluid operates as a single-phase coolant as the liquid phase of the WEG d… more

Boost Converters for Gas Electric and Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Description: Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are driven by at least two prime energy sources, such as an internal combustion engine (ICE) and propulsion battery. For a series HEV configuration, the ICE drives only a generator, which maintains the state-of-charge (SOC) of propulsion and accessory batteries and drives the electric traction motor. For a parallel HEV configuration, the ICE is mechanically connected to directly drive the wheels as well as the generator, which likewise maintains the SOC of propul… more

In NTS Area 7, we collected two-dimensional DC resistivity data along a transect crossing the Yucca Fault parallel to, and between, two transects along which resistivity data were collected in a previous study in 2006. In addition, w… more
