Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds

Description: Abstract: Chemical and physical data on twenty binary uranium compounds that may prove suitable for refractory nuclear fuels were assembled. The compounds were those with aluminum, boron, carbon, iron, nickel, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur. Too little is known at this time about the compounds to evaluate any of them for fuel. The program is being extended in an effort to provide the needed data.

Heat Exchanger Design Charts

Description: From introduction: "The ORNL-ANP liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger design and development effort has been based on an exceptionally high performance matrix of closely-spaced small diameter tubes that permits practically pure counter-flow operation. In the course of full-scale aircraft power plant design work a number of charts for this type of heat exchanger has been prepared. These charts were intended in part to show the effects of the various parameters in a readily understandable form, and in… more

Electromagnetic Research Division Quarterly Progress Report, Part I for Period Ending June 30, 1952

Description: From abstract: "On the 86-inch cyclotron a 41-kw beam has been calorimetered at a net ion loading efficiency of 40%; the average proton current was 1.85 ma at 22.5 Mev. Practical specific yields have been determined for (p,2n) reactions on zinc and bismuth. The investigation of products of proton-induced fission of uranium has been continued and new techniques are being used in measuring angular distribution of reaction products. The 63-inch heavy particle cyclotron is now in operation; N+++ pa… more

Final Report: Airborne Reconnaissance Project Dripping Spring, Quartzite, Gila County, Arizona

Description: Abstract: A low-level airborne radiometric survey of the younger pre-Cambrian Dripping Spring quartzite, undertaken in the mountainous region lying roughly 100 riles east of Phoenix, was completed June 3, 1955. Twenty-seven radioactive anomalies were located. To date seven of these have produced uranium ore, four more will probably become producers, and six others may possibly become producers. Flying was concentrated in the Dripping Spring quartzite, but reconnaissance flights were made over o… more

Chemical Development, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September, 1953.

Description: Introduction: "During the last quarter, members of the Chemical Development Group have been concerned with six major projects. (1) thermal and radiation properties of organic materials as moderators and coolants, (2) thermal and radiation stability of mirconium hydride, (e) reactor accessibility (transport of radioactive materials in cooling systems, ................. There have been, in addition, a number of smaller service projects, mostly of an analytical nature.:

Scale-Up of Alternate HRT Core

Description: "In order to determine the factors involved in the scale-up of cores with concentric inlet and outlet pipes, a 48 inch carbon steel flow model, geometrically similar to a 6 foot diameter core, has been assembled and tested...Visual studies were made of dye and gas behavior in the sphere, and quantitative measurements of point residence times were obtained through the use of conductivity cells actuating a Brush recorder. Static pressure drop across the core was measured."

Analytic Approach for the Pion-Proton Scattering Phase Shifts

Description: A simple method of solving for the phase shifts of the pion-proton scattering is presented. The rapid solution afforded can be utilized, as the Ashkin diagrams have been employed, to give starting values to an electronic computer or alternatively to analyze with more ease the variation of the phase shifts as a function of the input data in terms of the coefficients of the angular distributions. A new plot of a function of the total cross section versus the pion energy is introduced. The nearly … more
