Practical Methods for the Reduction of Strain Gage Data

Description: The error that results when it is attempted to evaluate stress from a reading taken on a single element SR-4 strain gage in a biaxial stress field is discussed. A method is presented for relating SR-4 rosette strain gage readings directly to the biaxial stress state without the necessity of first converting strain gage readings to true strains. Correction formulas are presented for use when single element SR-4 gages are used as rosette elements or as stress gages.

Research on Uranium-Base Alloys. Part I, Transformation Kinetics of Uranium-Base Alloys, Final Report, November 15, 1952 - August 31, 1955

Description: Information concerning the transformation kinetics of the gamma solid solution of uranium-base alloys is important. Accordingly, the metastability of the gamma phase was investigated for nine uranium-rich alloys of the U-Mo-Pt, U-Mo-Nb, and U-Nb systems. Samples were encapsulated in Vycor bulbs, solutions treated at 1000 decrees or 1050 degrees C, quenched to and annealed at temperatures between 600 degrees and 300 degrees C. Techniques employed to follow transformation included metallography, … more

Occurrence of Technetium in Nature : Final Report for the Period November 1, 1954 to August 31, 1955

Description: Twelve neutron activation analyses for naturally occurring technetium-98 were performed. Positive results were obtained in ten cases. Precautions were taken to avoid interference by molybdenum and technetium-99. the cross section for the reaction [formula] as found to be equal to 4 +- 2 mb for the neutron spectrum of the vertical thimbles of the Argonne CP-5 reactor. The chemical state of molybdenum (VI) in basic solution was studied by an anion-exchange technique. Evidence was obtained for the… more

A Cloud Chamber Study of the Secondary Particles from Locally Produced Penetrating Showers

Description: The present experiment was undertaken as an attempt to throw more light on the decay processes that had been observed prior to the summer of 1952, as well as to investigate any new decay processes that might manifest themselves. The source of high energy primary particles was to be the cosmic ray beam, so a detector of locally produced high energy penetration showers was used. In order to be able to detect effectively low energy photons and low energy secondaries from particles reaching the end… more

The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain

Description: The Grüneisen constant, as evaluated from the equation of state, is obtained for an Einstein solid. the presence of a state of finite hydrostatic pressure is taken into account explicitly by means of Murnaghan's theory of finite strain, to obtain the Grüneisen parameter's on the Debye and Einstein models. Results are identical in the two cases with the corresponding values obtained without use of the formal theory of finite strain.

The Influence of End Mirrors, High Density and Long Tube Length on Radial Diffusion

Description: Diffusion in an arc plasma across a magnetic field is investigated. The geometry is similar to that reported in ORNL-1890 but with the addition of magnetic mirrors on the ends of the arc chamber. It is shown that mirrors do not eliminate the "short circuit" effect. Comparison of the e-folding length, rₒ, of the radial ion density with and without mirrors, affords a direct measurement of ℓ/λ where ℓ is the arc length and λ the mean-free-path. In addition rₒ is independent of gas pressure with mi… more

The Effects of Reactor Irradiation of Thorium-Uranium Alloy Fuel Plates

Description: Several plates of 98.7% Th - 1.2% U 235 (clad in aluminum) were irradiated in the MTR for an integrated flux of 2.6 x 10 21 neutrons/cm2. Although these samples represent an early development in bonding of aluminum to thorium and there are better methods at present, the bond proved to be quite strong and both clad and core were dimensionally stable under irradiation. The production of uranium 233 was as much as theory would indicate and the total amount of fissionable material material after ir… more

Determination of Corrosion Products and Additives in Homogenous Reactor Fuel II. Polarographic Determination of Chromium

Description: A satisfactory ion-exchange-polarographic method was developed for the determination of either chromium(VI) or total chromium in Homogeneous Reactor fuels. Total chromium is determined as chromium (VI) , i.e., chromate, and in the same way as is chromium(VI), after chromium in the lower valence states is oxidized to chromate by potassium permanganate. Chromate is separated from all interfering metal ions in the fuel by ion exchange on a Dowex 50 resin column. The Chromate in the effluent is det… more

Electrical Precipitator for Aerosol Collection on Electron Microscope Screens

Description: In order to utilize the advantages of the electron microscope for the study of respirable particles, it is desirable to have an instrument capable of sampling from atmospheres having very sparse dispersions of particles at a rate sufficiently high to result in precipitation densities of approximately one particle per 10/u² of microscope screen for a 10 minute sampling period. In order to avoid qualitative or quantitative alteration of the aerosol, it was desired that the instrument collect the … more

The Coulometric Titration of Plutonium

Description: This work was performed to develop a general chemical method for the determination of small amounts of plutonium in solution. The work showed that a coulometric titration based on the preliminary oxidation of the plutonium to Pu (VI) followed by titration with electrolytically-generated ferrous ion to Pu (IV) was such a general method and was subject to few interferences. The significance of the work is that a chemical determination of plutonium can be made for amounts of plutonium heretofore d… more

Description: Relations governing the measurement of Stainless Steel corrosion rates by activation analysis are derived and discussed. The principal neutron induced radioactivities are calculated and graphed. Shielding requirements are considered and it is concluded that six inches of lead shielding should be sufficient for the proposed experiments if the samples are allowed to cool for one day in the reactor storage basin.
