1/N

Description: There exist families of field theories with symmetry group SO(N) (or SU(N)) that become simpler as N becomes larger. More precisely, the solutions to these theories possess an expansion in powers of 1/N. This expansion is the subject of these lectures. The 1/N expansion can be used to analyze model field theories. The 1/N expansion is developed for phi/sup 4/ theory and applied to two two-dimensional models with similar combinatoric structures, the Gross-Neveu model and the CP/sup N-1/ model. T… more

3-D Nonlinear Calculations of Resistive Tearing Modes

Description: Recent numerical calculations of the evolution of resistive tearing modes have been central to the understanding of magnetohydrodynamic activity and disruptions in tokamaks. The nonlinear, 3-D, initial-value computer code RSF has provided many of these results. This code assumes cylindrical geometry with a Fourier series representation in the two periodic coordinates and a finite-difference representation in the radial direction. This choice makes RSF considerably more accurate and efficient th… more

6 GeV synchrotron x-ray source: Conceptual design report. Supplement A - characteristics of the insertion devices for the 6 GeV synchrotron source

Description: Historically, synchrotron radiation (SR) has been obtained primarily from bending-magnet (BM) sources. These continuous sources of electromagnetic radiation have contributed in a major way to our understanding of the structure and dynamics of biological, chemical and material systems. During the past few years, newer sources of SR based on sophisticated periodic magnetic structures, called insertion devices (IDs), have been developed. The electromagnetic radiation from these IDs can be used as … more

216-S-1 and S-2 mixed-fission-product crib-characterization study

Description: The 216-S-1 and 2 crib is an underground structure that was used for the disposal of radioactively contaminated liquid waste at the Hanford Site. The crib received acidic, intermediate level, mixed fission-product waste solutions from 1952 to 1956. The 1980 status of radioactive contaminants in the sediment beneath the crib was investigated. The results indicate that the radionuclide distributions are stable, with no evidence of significant translocations found since the late 1960's.

E-740 proportional drift tube tests

Description: The D0 muton detector will consist of large area arrays of proportional drift tubes (PDT's). The beam crossing repetition rate together with the trigger processing time will constrain the maximum drift time to be about one microsecond, corresponding to a drift distance of about 5.0 cm. With such a narrow cell width, it is possible to use rather long cells (up to 6.0 meters) and still keep cell occupancy acceptable. To simplify track reconstruction, space points will be recorded for each track. … more

The A0 abort system for the Tevatron upgrade

Description: The installation of electrostatic separator modules at B48 and C17 in the Tevatron necessitates changes to the Tevatron abort system. There will no longer be room for either the proton or antiproton kicker magnets used in the present system. The kickers at C17 will be permanently removed. The kickers at B48 will be temporarily removed for collider operation and will be replaced for fixed target operation. The existing proton abort system will remain unchanged during fixed target operation. This… more

Acid rain: commentary on controversial issues and observations on the role of fuel burning

Description: Even though much information has been accumulated on the subject of acid precipitation, lack of knowledge in certain technical areas precludes an adequate understanding of (1) how serious the acid precipitation problem really is and (2) what effect controlling sources of acid precipitation precursors would have in reducing acidification. It is nevertheless possible to draw some broad conclusions regarding the problem and to ascertain the direction that the required further work should take. Thi… more

Acoustic emission signature analysis. Technical progress report No. 2, 1 March 1979-29 February 1980

Description: Acoustic emission in plate glass and steel has been studied as a function of angle. The low frequency AE in glass (< 1 MHz) was studied in detail, and contributions from P, S and Rayleigh waves identified. These results are isotropic, as expected theoretically. Limited high frequency (5-20 MHz) results have been obtained in glass. This is the first time, that AE energy has been measured above 3 MHz. The measurement of AE on transgranular crack growth in steel during fatigue crack growth was acc… more

Actinide partitioning-transmutation program final report. VI. Short-term risk analysis of reprocessing, refabrication, and transportation: summary

Description: A Partitioning-Transmutation (PT) fuel cycle is being compared to a Reference cycle employing conventional fuel-material recovery methods. The PT cycle uses enhanced recovery methods so that most of the long-lived actinides are recycled to nuclear power plants and transmuted thereby reducing the waste toxicity. This report compares the two fuel cycles on the basis of the short-term radiological and nonradiological risks. The accidental radiological risk to the public is analyzed by estimating t… more

Activation of sweeping magnets in Tevatron II standardized target piles

Description: As designs of the primary targeting schemes for the new Tevatron II slow spill beams progress, it is becoming clear that a standardized form for these schemes is emerging. The general form consists of a production target (usually about 30 cm of beryllium having a diameter from 0.64 to 1.27 cm) followed by from one to three of the new Tevatron II H frame magnets recently developed by D. Eartly. These magnets sweep the unused primary proton beam onto a massive steel beam dump containing a core of… more
