Mechanical design issues associated with mounting, maintenance, and handling of an ITER divertor

Description: Several designs that address plasma-facing plate configurations and thermal-hydraulic design issues have been developed for the ITER divertor. Design criteria growing out of physics requirements, physical constraints, and remote handling requirements impose severe mechanical requirements on the support structure and its attachments. These pose a challenge to the mechanical design of a divertor, which must be addressed before a functional divertor is practical -- that is, one that can be remotel… more

Combined long reach and dexterous manipulation for waste storage tank applications

Description: One of the highest priority environmental restoration tasks within the Department of Energy (DOE) is the remediation of single-shell waste storage tanks (WSTs), especially those suspected of, or documented as, leakers. Most currently proposed approaches for remediation of large underground WSTs require application of remotely operated long-reach (greater than 10 m), high-lift capacity (greater than 200 kg) manipulator systems. Because of the complexity of in-tank hardware, waste forms, remediat… more
