The Snap Ii Power Conversion System Topical Report No. 12. Boiler Development

Description: The SNAP II boilers which were designed are summarized. As shown by test results from the three boilers which were tested, a continuous progress in design was achieved. These designs were based on test data from both the SNAP I and SNAP II programs. As the quantity of data increased, physical models describing the heat transfer process were developed. Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. Boundary element formulation for planar time-dependent inelastic deformation of plates with cutouts

Description: A boundary element formulation for planar, time-dependent, inelastic deformation problems for bodies with cutouts is presented in this paper. A stress function description for these nonlinear problems leads to a nonhomogeneous biharmonic equation for the stress function rate. Mass Transfer Coefficients and Interfacial Area in a One Stage Pulse Column

CASTING OF LONG AND THIN PLATES OF URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS

Description: The development of procedures for the vacuum induction casting of U--Mo alloys into both thin (0.010 to 0.100-in. thick) plates and long (36 in.) plates is described. Melting and casting cycles were developed, and casting techniques established, which resulted in sound, integral plates. Optimization of a VISAR for measuring flyer-plate velocities

Description: VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector) is commonly used for measuring flyer-plate velocities up to 6 km/s. Flyer plates can travel as much as 1 mm, which is large compared to usual depth-of-focus requirements for VISARs. Boundary element analysis of time-dependent inelastic deformation of cracked plates loaded in anti-plane shear

Description: A boundary element analysis, for determining stresses in planar cracked bodies undergoing Mode I or Mode II inelastic deformation, has been recently published by the present authors. Progress with small, high-magnetic-field spheromaks in CTX

Description: The current CTX program is directed towards using spheromaks as an energy transfer medium to accelerate metal plates to hypervelocity. In the proposed scheme, the spheromak is first compressed by accelerating a large plate to moderate velocity (3--5 km/s) with high explosives (HE). A numerical study of Rayleigh-Taylor instability in aluminum and steel plates

Description: The SCRAM code is applied to the study of Rayleigh-Taylor instability in metal plates, and comparisons of these computer results are made with experimental data for 1100-O aluminum, 6061-T6 aluminum and 304 stainless steel. Various models for the pressure, temperature, and strain-rate dependencies of the flow stress are compared in the computer calculations. STATUS REPORT ON LAMB WAVES

Description: Theoretical and experimental aspects of Lamb waves are considered. These are described as body waves, or modes, which travel throughout an entire plate and are radiated from both surfaces, so that it is possible to detect Lamb waves when the receiver and sender are on opposite sides of the plate. Mathematical Analysis of Rippling of Type 1 Fuel Plates. Part 1

Description: Rippling phenomena due to heating in fuel plates of SM and PM type reactors are investigated analytically using small deflection theory of plates. Temperature variations across the width of the plate are accounted for. Detailed calculations are conducted for simply supported plates. It is found that within the limitations imposed by small deflection theory that the amplitude of the plate ripples induced by the heating is directly proportional to the initial amplitude. (auth)
