Story of Juniper Tree of Boyo by Dawar Muneeb

Description: A recoding of Dawar Muneem reciting “The Juniper Tree of Boyo,” in the Hunza dialect. This story tells of a Big Juniper Tree before Islam came to the region. Under the tree lived creatures that were a mix of a puppy and a penguin, and they were fed to bring good luck to families. When people would cut the tree, it was thought that the tree would take revenge, either by killing the criminal, or by driving them crazy.

Story of Vazir of Shiri Badat by Abdullah

Description: Recording of Abdullah Minapin reciting an account of The Wazir of Shiri Badat in the Nagar dialect of Burushaski. In this story, Abdullah’s relative moves to the kingdom of a godlike Shiri Badat, who appoints Abdullah’s ancestor to the position of a minister (Wazir). Shiri Badat tastes a goat who was fed human milk, and grew enamored with the taste, and demanded from then on to be sacrificed young boys to eat. Abdullah’s ancestor, Demsing, was horrified, and begged the King’s daughter to tell the town’s people how to kill the tyrant, and she relented.

Story of Maghlot and Girkis by Raja Jamsheed Ali Khan

Description: Transcription and translation of the recording of Raja Jamsheed Ali Khan narrating the story of "Maghlot ke Girkits" ('weasel and rat') in the Srinagar dialect. In this popular story two boys are born conjoined, and are separated by a knife. The two brothers are raised by two separate clans, always meeting in constant contention with each other, giving them the nicknames Maghlot ('weasel') and Girkits ('rat') for their physical and behavioral traits. Knowing the brothers would create instability, the king separates the kingdom into two halves, creating the divide between the Hunza and the Nagar people
