“36 Etudes for Violin Solo,” Op. 48 (1881) by Henri Vieuxtemps (1820–1881): A Practical Guide and Comparison with the “42 Etudes or Caprices” by Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766–1831)

Description: The 36 Etudes for Violin Solo, Op. 48 by the Franco-Belgian virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps were composed at the end of his career and dedicated to the Paris Conservatory. He created a unique combination of technical elements and musical writing. Such a combination is the most useful for students today, as it leads to a much easier transition to the practical repertoire. Yet these etudes are not often employed by teachers and students, especially in the United States. This document explores several o… more

Academic Dishonesty in the Age of AI: Connecting Student Generative AI Use and the Fraud Triangle within Health Professions Education

Description: This research explores the influence of generative AI (GenAI) tools, like ChatGPT, on academic integrity within higher education. By applying the fraud triangle framework—which includes incentive, opportunity, and rationalization—this study aims to understand the motivations behind student misuse of GenAI technologies for academic dishonesty. The study employed a quantitative survey to analyze the relationship between these fraud triangle constructs and student behaviors in a sample of graduate… more

Adulthood in Flux: Young Adults Navigating the Pathways to Adulthood in Contemporary America

Description: This dissertation examines the evolution of adulthood transition in the US. It focuses on adult role transitions and individualistic achievements within the context of adulthood transition. At the outset, the possible connections these viewpoints may have with young adults’ self-perception about being an adult and how they relate with beliefs about the American Dream are examined. Subsequently, it focuses on the phenomenon of boomeranging which is one of the new patterns of behavior that has em… more

An Analysis of Staff Play Behaviors

Description: In behavior analytic research and clinical practice, creativity has been examined as variability in responding. This is an especially important topic for children with autism spectrum disorder, who are more likely to engage in restricted, repetitive patterns of responding. Previous researchers have evaluated several antecedent (e.g., prompting) and consequent strategies (e.g., lag schedules) to increase response variability across a variety of socially significant responses. One area receiving … more

An Analysis of the University Interscholastic League Prescribed Music List for Trumpet Choir and Suggestions toward Additional Repertoire

Description: The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Solo and Ensemble Contest utilizes a prescribed music list (PML) from which performers must choose their repertoire. This research aims to propose additional repertoire for the trumpet choir category of the PML while addressing the lack of a codified rubric for classifying such works. Through the examination of extant methods that grade a variety of repertoire, an amalgamated set of criteria was developed and a rubric was formed after analyzing the ex… more

"Atraves de nuestros ojos": Resiliency and a Mother's Intuition; Navigating Congenital Cardiac Care in Central Washington

Description: This study seeks to provide a better understanding of the complex social processes and experiences of seeking cardiac care in rural clinics and what that looks like through the eyes of Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers. This research focuses on Spanish-speaking families who have a child with a cardiac diagnosis and receive care at the Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Tri-Cities or Wenatchee Clinics – both of which are situated within Department of Health designated health professional shorta… more

An Autoethnographic Survey on Community Archival Practices of African Americans in Texas during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Description: In a pioneering effort, this study examined the participatory practices of the African American community in Texas using community archives and the role of information professionals. This dissertation is driven by two research questions that arise from the COVID-19 pandemic: Q1: What factors influence African American communities in Texas to engage in community archiving practices for inclusion in Black galleries, libraries, archives, and museums? and Q2: What role does the researcher play in a… more

Between Institutions: Black Students’ Perceptions of Belonging at a PWI vs. MSI

Description: Despite increases in representation, Black students still struggle to feel like they belong on their college campuses, which negatively impacts their retention, mental health, and academic success. Although previous studies have shown how a lowered sense of belonging negatively affects Black students, most of this research has centered on Black students attending predominately white institutions (PWIs), thereby offering little information on the nature and consequences of a lowered sense of bel… more

Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing of Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt Tooling Material

Description: This research investigated the binder jet additive manufacturing (BJAM) of WC-10 wt.%Co, emphasizing the evolution of phase and microstructure throughout BJAM densification techniques. The BJAM process was first optimized by setting a layer thickness of 124 μm and a binder saturation level of 60%. Initial samples were fabricated using coarse WC particles (D50 - 28 μm) and fine Co particles. Printed parts underwent a curing step at 200°C to enhance green density, enabling part stability. Subsequ… more

Bio-Based Fatty Acid Synthesization from Recycling Waste Cooking Oil and Its Applications

Description: Waste cooking oils (WCOs) are generated every day in the world, and a large amount of WCOs are disposed in landfills as solid wastes. It would cause serious problems. In this study, a novel method for recycling WCO has been developed based on hydrolysis and hydrogenation processes. The final products are value-added and melting point-adjustable WCO fatty acid (WCOFA) phase change materials (PCMs). Moreover, chemical structures characterization and thermal properties investigation have been con… more

Bioactivity of Bioprinted Scaffolds Using Hybrid PEGDA and Self-Assembling Peptide Bio-Inks for Culture of Human Dermal Fibroblast Cells

Description: This study investigates the bioactivity of bioprinted scaffolds cultured with adult human dermal fibroblast cells (aHDF) used for tissue regeneration by employing Lumen X+ 3D bioprinter. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) is the widely used bioink in these Lumen bioprinters. Although PEGDA is meritorious for its photopolymerization capabilities and biological and biomedical applications, it has very minimal inherent cell adhesion and proliferation properties. Hence in order to improvise thi… more

The Body Satisfaction and Disordered Eating of Black Men Collegiate Athletes: An Examination of Resilience, Self-Compassion, and Social Support

Description: Although body image and disordered eating (DE) have been extensively studied among women athletes, research with men athletes has been more limited, particularly with those athletes who identify as Black/African American. Men, like women, athletes feel pressure to conform to body ideals (e.g., lean, muscular) that can contribute to being more dissatisfied with body size and shape and ultimately to being more disordered in their eating (e.g., dietary restriction). What is less known, however, is… more

Capturing Transient and Intermediate States of Coordination Chemistry Under High Pressure

Description: This dissertation aims to establish experimental methods to characterize transient states of chemical reactions by stabilizing transient states using mechanical stress. We argue that gigapascal (GPa)-level pressure produces deformed molecular structures that approximate the transient states along the reaction coordinate on the ground-state surface, thereby fundamentally understanding their mechanism through high-pressure mechanochemistry. By varying the pressure, the entire reaction path can be… more

Caregiver Self-Perceived Comfort Level and Training Resource as Predictors of Augmentative and Alternative Communication Use

Description: Using a descriptive quantitative approach, this study examined the role of caregiver self-perceived comfort level (SPCL) in the success of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system implementation. The role of SPCL as a mediator variable affecting the relationship between the predictor variable (caregiver training resources) and the outcome variable (AAC use) was investigated. Related factors examined as covariates include caregiver demographics (gender, education level, and settin… more
