The conductivity change in polyethylene during irradiation

Description: From abstract: "This temperature data serves to suggest an ionic mechanism for electrical conduction in polyethylene as opposed to an electronic mechanism. In fact, the ion contributing most to the conduction in the polyethylene may well be the proton."

Description of a Dropping Mercury Polaroscope

Description: Abstract: " The construction and operation of a dropping mercury polaroscope developed by Quentin A. Kerns is described herein. With this polaroscope a Heyrovsky polarogram is automatically produced on the screen of a cathode ray tube during the formation of each drop at the tip of a dropping mercury electrode, a change in the resistance of the cell operates to initiate the generation of a voltage wave to be applied to the cell during the formation of the next drop during a predetermined fracti… more

Determination of Radium in Residues : Dissolution of the Sample in Condensed Phosphoric Acids

Description: "The method described was developed for the determination of radium in residues containing silica, berium and lead sulfates, and other oxides and sulfates. The sample is heated in a platinum vessel with orthophosphoric and hydrofluoric acids on continued heating, silica, excess HF, and sulfate are eveolved and the resultant clear, viscous melt is completely soluble in water. Radium may be determined in an appropriate aliquot of this solution by the standard barium chlorids carrier precipitation… more

Effect of Epithermal Capture on η

Description: The purpose of this report is to investigate the effect of neutrons being captured before they are completely slowed down and have the chance to leak out and thus correspondingly increase the multiplication factor of the lattice.

The Effect of Hydrogen on the Stability of, and the Stabilization of Perfluoro Oils Toward Fluorine

Description: The following report discusses methods developed through various investigations on the effect of hydrogen on the stability and stabilization of perfluoro oils toward fluorine, using compounds of carbon and fluorine or "perfluorocarbons" as the subject of study.

Electromagnetic Research Division Quarterly Progress Report, Part I for Period Ending March 31, 1952

Description: From abstract: "Relocation of the ion source in the 86-inch cyclotron has increased the available beam energy substantially. Modifications have also been made to permit the use of targets of 100 square inches. Proton currents of one milliampere can now be obtained readily at ~24 Mev. The 63-inch cyclotron has been completely assembled and checked. In rf tests a 75 kv dee-to-dee voltage has been maintained, under vacuum, for long periods without evidences of failures, thus exceeding the 60 kv de… more

Equilibria and Reaction Rates in the Disproportionation of Pu(IV)

Description: Abstract: "The equilibrium quotients and the specific rate constants for the disproportionation of Pu(IV) have been measured as a function of hydrogen and plutonium ion concentrations in perchloric acid solutions of unit ionic strength at 25.00 +/- 0.02. Instead of obtaining the plutonium ion concentrations spectrophotometrically as has been done by previous workers, measurements of the mean oxidation number of the solutions were combined with electromotive force measurements of the Pu(III)-Pu(… more

Estimates of Minimum Critical Volumes

Description: Introduction: "A study has been made of the available high assay criticality data for materials of 93.4% and 95.3% U-235, 1, 2, 3 and minimum critical volumes have been estimated for several conditions."

An Experimental Study of the Performance of a Cavity Type Ionization Chamber

Description: Abstract: "Comparisons between calorimetric and ionization chamber measurements of the power generated in graphite by absorption of energetic gamma rays have been carried out. The results serve as a calibration of the chamber. They also serve to test the consistency between the theoretical performance of this type of chamber and previously determined values for the factors which relate ionization in the chamber to energy absorption in the walls."

Handbook on Air Cleaning Particulate Removal

Description: Handbook developed for Atomic Energy Commission personnel to provide current information on air cleaning methods and criteria for judging their effectiveness. The information is limited to particulate removal and does not cover the fields of ventilation or the removal of gaseous contaminants. The technical report includes discussions of the behavior of aerosols in air cleaning, air cleaning equipment, the performance and evaluation of air cleaning equipment, and special problems involved in th… more

Measurements of the Viscosity of FLiNaK : (11.5 Mol % NAF, 42 Mo. % KF, and 46.5 Mol % LiF)

Description: Abstract: "To supplement measurements made with the falling-ball viscometer it was decided to obtain data taken by more rapid, though probably less exact devices. Three essentially different methods were employed to obtain this data. Measurements were made on Flinak which deviated from the average by about +/- 1 centipoise. The data obtained by the Physical Properties Laboratory is in substantial agreement with the measurements made by Francois Kertess and Frank Knox of the Chemistry Section. … more
