Some Effects of X-Irradiaion on the Adrenal Response to Hypothalamic Stimulation in Rats

Description: Exactly where in the hypothalamus is the adrenal-pituitary response to X-irradiation "triggered" or initiated? Moreover, does ionizing radiation act directly on specific centers in the brain or does it act indirectly via the production of some humoral agents? Finally, what role does the hypothalamus play in the radiation-syndrome? The purpose of the present study was to attempt to answer these questions by determining the effects of two stressor agents, X-irradiation and electrical stimulation … more

Low energy gamma-transitions in Pu{sup 238} and Pu{sup 240}

Description: We investigated electron and gamma spectra of mixtures of isotopes of curium. This was done on a beta spectrometer with double focusing at an angle of {pi}{radical}2 and on a scintillation gamma spectrometer with a 40 {times} 40 mm NAI(Tl) single crystal detector. The observed electron spectrum are interpolated and presented. Also, experimental results of the ratio of conversion at L and M subshells are presented and compared to theoretical values.

Thermal stability of zirconia-s and thoria-base fuels (LWBR Development Program)

Description: Vapor densities and/or dissociation pressures of UO/sub 2/, ThO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/, ThO/sub 2/-8 and -20 wt % UO/sub 2/, and ZrO/sub 2/-20 and -50 wt % UO/sub 2/ were obtained in the range from 2000 to 3000/sup 0/K by the transpiration technique. The UO/sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/ system exhibited marked positive deviation from ideality, indicative of a strong tendency toward immiscibility. The UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ system was found to behave almost ideally. On the basis of the vapor pressures of UO/sub 2… more

THE PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF PYRIDINE N-OXIDE

Description: The authors wish to report their results on the photolysis of pyridine N-oxide in alcoholic solution. Both methanol and ethanol solutions of pyridine N-oxide were irradiated. The reaction mixture was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) using a 2.5% FFAP on Chrom G column and a Porapak Q column. In order to collect the products, the volume of the photolysis solution was reduced in vacuo and the resulting mixture was separated by preparative GLC.
