Studies Related to the Charleston, South Carolina, Earthquake of 1886: a Preliminary Report

Description: From abstract: The seismic history of the southeastern United States is dominated by the 1886 earthquake near Charleston, S.C. An understanding of the specific source and the uniqueness of the neotectonic setting of this large earthquake is essential in order to properly assess seismic hazards in the southeastern United States. Such knowledge will also contribute to the fundamental understanding of intraplate earthquakes and will aid indirectly in deciphering the evolution of Atlantic-type continental margins. The 15 chapters in this volume report on the first stage of an ongoing multidisciplinary study of the Charleston earthquake of 1886.

Uranium in the Southern United States

Description: From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Techniques for Estimating Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in South Carolina

Description: Information is presented for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on streams in South Carolina. Flood-frequency characteristics for 151 gaging stations were related to basin characteristics by multiple regression techniques for each of four physiographic provinces. Equations were derived to estimate flood magnitudes at recurrence intervals ranging from 2 to 100 years on streams with drainage areas greater than 1.0 square mile. Examples demonstrate the procedure for computing flood-frequency discharge for sites on gaged and ungaged streams in South Carolina. Relationships of flood discharge and frequency to drainage area are presented for the main stem of major streams. A compilation of flood records for gaging stations in South Carolina is presented as supplemental data.
