Diffusion of Slow Electrons in Gases

Description: The properties of electrons in a gas and an external electric field, e.g., agitation velocity, free path, energy lost per collision, and collision cross sections, were determined for electrons of energy less than 2 ev in a large number of gases. The computations were made from previously measured values for Townsend's energy factor or the ratio of electron agitation energy to molecule thermal energy. Results are presented for hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, cyclopropane, and argon. (D.L.C.)

A Study of the Kinetic and Mechanical Properties of a Stabilized Beta Phase Plutonium Alloy

Description: The elements Sn, Mg, Ti, Zr, Hf, Si, Cd, and U were alloyed with plutonium to determine their effect on stabilization of the beta phase. Zirconium was found to be the ' most effective. Kinetic studies were conducted on Pu-Zr alloys having 0.24, 0.65, and 1.7 at.% Zr contents. The beta to alpha transformation in the Pu-Zr alloys was somewhat similar to that in unalloyed plutonium. The main difference being that time, temperature, transformation curves of the alloys were shifted to the right as the zirconium concentration increased. It was determined that the amount of beta phase retained at room temperature increased as the zirconium concentration increased. The minimum amount of Zr needed to stabilize the beta phase of plutonium at room temperature was determined to be 2.0 at.%. A 2.4 at.% Zr addition stabilized the beta phase of plutonium at atmospheric pressure from room temperature to 265 deg C. During mechanical property testing it was determined that the stabilized beta Pu-2.4 at.% Zr alloy was brittle from room temperature to 230 deg C. Both tensile and compression strengths of the beta stabilized alloy were greater than the unalloyed beta phase of plutonium. A brittle-ductile transition was noted between 130 and 180 deg C on the Pu-0.65 at.% Zr alloy. Age hardening studies were conducted at room temperature with a Pu -2.4 at.% Zr alloy. A slight aging effect was noted due to the precipitation of an intermetallic compound. Compression tests on the Pu-2.4 at.% Zr alloy indicated that below 80 deg C the stabilized beta phase started to transform to alpha phase during the application of compressive loads. (auth)

Theory of ordering transformations in metals and minerals

Description: This dissertation presents an investigation of ordering in FCC based systems using the pair potential approximation in the ground state and mean field limits. The theoretical approach is used to explain the occurrence of observed equilibrium phases and characteristics of thermodynamic instabilities, in particular, spinodal ordering and decomposition. It is shown that the stability of non-integer domain sizes in long period superstructures such as Al{sub 3}Ti and Ag{sub 3}Mg may result from the tendency of a system to reduce the number of non-dominant ordering waves, thus producing domain sizes that have rational fraction form n/m. This conclusion is used to explain the domain size stability with respect to variations in temperature and electron concentration. The cation ordering in the precipitate phases in calcite and dolomite is analyzed by analogy with ordering in FCC based metals. The ordered phases in calcite and dolomite are shown to be consistent with pair potential minima at {l brace}100{r brace} and {l brace}1/2, 1/2, 1/2{r brace} positions in reciprocal space respectively. 32 refs., 6 figs.

Transient Temperature Distributions in a Thermally Orthotropic Plate With Non-Uniform Surface Heating

Description: ent temperature variation in a thermally orthotropic plate which is subjected to an arbitrary heating rate distribution along one face with all other surfaces being insulated. Dimensionless temperature histories and distributions determined from this solution are presented for the special, but representative, case of a linearly varying heating rate distribution on plates with varying degrees of thermal orthotropy. These results establish quantitatively the value of a material with high planar and low normal thermal conductivities for applications where it is desired to maintain minimum temperatures on the rear or unheated surface of a heat shield when the heated surface is subjected to a very non-uniform heating rate distribution. The applicability of simplifying assumptions in analyzing such a system is discussed. Experimental temperature measurements in a pyrolytic graphite plate heated by an oxyacetylene flame were made to verify the analytical results. Achievement of satisfactory agreement wss found to be dependent upon use of thermal property values differing from those presently available for this material. This is not unusual in that differences in production methods are known to introduce substantial property variations in anisotropic materials such as pyrolytic graphite. (auth)

Noise Considerations in Nuclear Pulse Amplifiers

Description: The effects of certain pulse-shaping networks on the signal-to-noise ratio of a nuclear pulse amplifier were considered. The shaping networks discussed are: equal RC-integrating and RC-differentiating time constant, single- delay-line clipper and RC integrator, and doubledelay-line clipper and RC integrator. The effects of these networks on the signal, when high count rates and overload pulses are present, were also considered. Equations and curves were developed for the energy resolution (signal-tonoise ratio) and resolving time (related to the ability to operate at high counting rates) of the networks. Experimental results are shown for the energy resolution of the types of pulse- shaping networks considered. (auth)

Missa Salve Regina

Description: Missa Salve Regina, a five movement work, is approximately twenty minutes in duration. The work is a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin with additional text in the vernacular drawn from the writings of Miguel de Unamuno. The composition is scored for four speaking soloists (SATB), mixed chorus (SATB, percussion (player 1: tam tam, three suspended cymbal, bass drum, three tom-toms, glockenspiel, maracas, and marimba), and digital synthesizer optionally on tape. The Missa Salve Regina is concerned with the spiritual implications of the mass and its ritual. The music is composed for both concert presentation and use within the liturgy and deals with the conflict between faith and reason in the human mind, discussed at length, by Unamuno.

Mulima

Description: Mulima is a work intended to be used as the score for a ballet. The composition utilizes a large orchestra: 2-3-3-3, 4-3-3-1, 5 percussion, and full strings. The work is constructed in one large act which is comprised of three scenes and lasts approximately 45 to 50 minutes.

In Memoriam H.W. Reese

Description: In Memoriam H. W. Reese is written for chamber orchestra and small mixed chorus, in honor of the composer's father, Hardy W. Reese (March 22, 1926-Nov. 23, 1982). The piece is written in one continuous movement with a total duration of approximately fifteen minutes. Within the work there are three distinct sections, each on texts dealing with a different stage in the process of reconciliation with death.

The Icarus Triptych: A Composition in Three Movements for Symphonic Wind and Percussion Ensemble

Description: The composition was written as a laboratory experience in contemporary music especially for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of the Skyline Career Development Center in Dallas, Texas. Based upon the Greek myth of Icarus, the movements are entitled, "Imprisoned", "Flight" , and "The Fall." The approximate performance time is 17 minutes, 45 seconds.

An Original Composition, "Peace"

Description: The composition which follows is a sacred cantata entitled Peace. It is a musical composition utilizing soprano, tenor, and baritone soli and mixed chorus with keyboard accompaniment, and deals with peace as it applies to the much discussed problem of world unity. It may be presented effectively with piano or organ accompaniment and mey be arranged for orchestra or ensemble accompaniment.

Bay Psalmes - 1640 (Symphony no. 3)

Description: Bay Psalmes-1640 is a large work in four movements for orchestra and chorus. The chorus employed is SATB but each of the four sections may be divided into firsts and seconds as required. The orchestra is a standard symphony orchestra consisting of woodwinds in threes, brass of four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, percussion including orchestral bells, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, triangle, cymbals and suspended cymbal. Special instruments include the harp and the celesta. The orchestra is completed by the usual complement of strings.

String Quartet

Description: The first movement of the "String Quartet" opens with a gradual unfolding of the lead motive in the first six measures of the section marked "Largo." The second theme is heard in the first two measures of the section marked "Moderato" after a false start by the first violin. The third movement utilizes the essential dance characteristics of the "Minuet" marking.

Concertante : For Violoncello and Magnetic Tape

Description: The composition is in one movement for cello and two-channel tape, requiring approximately twelve minutes for performance. The character of the work is aggressive and decisive in nature, with areas of repose occurring only at the beginning and before the conclusion. The title "concertante" is used to describe a concert-piece in which each of the two instruments.

Six Pieces for Orchestra

Description: The six Pieces for Orchestra are short twelve-tone compositions . Each piece is an individual entity in itself, but they all stem from the same twelve-tone row. The method of composition with twelve tones evolved through the works of Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). It was utilized by his disciples and has won general acceptance by a wide variety of composers.

Concerto Grosso for Oboe, Clarinet, Piano, and String Quartet

Description: The first movement of the present work is a French overture patterned in form after the overtures of Jean Baptiste Lully. The second movement (Lento) is a simple ABA song-form and presents a rather rhapsodic development of its theme. The third movement consists of a set of six continuous variations on the polyphonic chanson Revecy venu du printans by Claude le Jeune (1528-1600). The last movement is a rondo (ABACADA).

Problem of the Arrangement for Two Pianos of Iberia by I. Albeniz

Description: The literal meaning of "transcription" is "written across"; in freer terminology it is "the musical counter-part of literary translation." The terms "arrangement" and "transcription: are used synonymously by nearly all musical dictionaries. However, even then , there is often a distinction made, an arrangement being considered to adhere strictly to the original text while a transcription admits of creative participation on part of the arranger, ranging from the simple transference of musical medium to the complete reworking of a composition with additions and modifications.
