Preparedness to Counsel HIV-Positive Clients: a Survey of Practitioners

Description: This purpose of this study was to investigate and examine the attitudes of therapists who treat HIV-positive (HIV+) clients. Specifically, therapists' perceptions of their own preparedness in dealing with specific issues and emotions of HIV+ clients were examined. Also, therapists' evaluation of their own efficacy of specific therapeutic approaches with HIV+ clients was examined. These therapists' perceptions and evaluations of all their clients in general were compared to their HIV+ clients. Comparisons were also made within the two groups.

"Near-Death Experiences with Hallucinatory Features" Defended

Description: Article purporting that near-death experience (NDE) reports are sometimes open to multiple interpretations, that different kinds of NDEs should be distinguished according to their diverse physiological mechanisms, and that transformations following NDEs but not other hallucinatory experiences require special explanation if NDEs are hallucinations.

On the Mind/Body Problem: The Theory of Essence

Description: Article exploring the classical mind/body problem using instances of the near-death experience (NDE) as experimental data. Comparison of the details of the NDE with predictions from theoretical cosmology shows strong similarities between the two and further strengthens the case for dualism. A theory of human nature is proposed that incorporates these similarities.

Near-Death Experiences with Hallucinatory Features

Description: Article surveying near-death experiences (NDEs) incorporating out-of-body discrepancies, bodily sensations, encounters with living persons and fictional characters, random or insignificant memories, returns from a point of no return, hallucinatory imagery, and unfulfilled predictions. Though attempts to accommodate hallucinatory NDEs within a survivalist framework are possible, they signal a failure to take the empirical evidence against a survivalist interpretation of NDEs seriously.

Earthquake Resistance of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams, Report 2: Analysis of Response of Rifle Gap Dam to Project Rulison Underground Nuclear Detonation

Description: Summary: The motion of Rifle Gap Dam was measured in September 1969 during the Project RULISON underground nuclear explosion. The observed response was then compared with the response computed in a mathematical model. Observed and computed responses were similar. From this study it appears that the mathematical models used are applicable to the design and analysis of soil structures, at least for ground motion intensities comparable to those observed at Rifle Gap Dam. "Psychophysiological and Cultural Correlates Undermining a Survivalist Interpretation of Near-Death Experiences" Defended

Description: Article responding to objections raised against another article. The author concedes some of the objections up to a point, but concludes that they neither strengthen the case for a survivalist interpretation of near-death experiences, nor weaken the case against one.

A Review of the Physical and Engineering Properties of Raw and Retorted Oil Shales from the Green River Formation: Final Report

Description: "This report summarizes published geotechnical properties of raw and retorted oil shales from the Green River Formation. Basic physical properties including gradation, specific gravity and Atterberg limits and engineering properties including compaction, permeability, settlement, soundness, and strength are summarized and discussed. Where appropriate, conclusions are drawn about the suitability of retorted oil shales as a geotechnical construction material. Appendix A discusses three retorting processes used to extract oil from oil shale" (abstract, para. 2-3).

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance of the Moab NTMS Quadrangle, Utah/Colorado, Including Concentrations of Forty-Three Additional Elements

Description: Partial abstract: "During the summers of 1976, 1977, and 1978, 442 water and 1755 sediment samples were collected from 1801 locations within the 19 400 km2 area of the Moab quadrangle, Utah and Colorado, by private contractors for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Water samples were collected from streams, springs, and wells; wet and dry sediment samples were collected both from stream channels and from springs. Each water sample was analyzed for 13 elements, including uranium, and each sediment sample was analyzed for 43 elements, including uranium, thorium, and vanadium. All field and analytical data are listed in the appendixes of this report" (p. 1).
