Teaching English in Kindergarten (MP 1543)

Description: This educational film demonstrates educational techniques for teaching English to Spanish-speaking students in Kindergarten with a focus on students of Mrs. Guerra at the Ford Elementary School in Pharr, Texas. These techniques can be found in the teacher's manual, "Teaching English Early," which is part of the set of materials in the Region One Curriculum Kit (ROCK). This film shows the students and Mrs. Guerra participating in language exercises.

Description: A scrapbook compiled by the Gordon Knox family containing materials (press releases, newspaper and journal clippings, advertisements, trade notices and other ephemera) about and related to the Princeton Film Center and Gordon Knox film productions. The items contained in the scrapbook were produced between 1941 and 1961.

Teaching Reading to Spanish Speakers (MP 1544)

Description: This educational film concerns educational techniques for teaching Spanish-language kindergarten students how to read in English. Techniques include teaching children to read in Spanish before learning to read in English. The film discusses a 3-year pilot program to teach these techniques at the Lamar School in Edinburg, Texas, which began in 1969. Kindergarten and first grade teachers Marcelia Reyes, Ninfa Guerra, Eva Corona, and Christina Chavez discuss their positive experiences with the bilingual education method discussed in the film. The narrator introduces Jacinto Lopez, a child who came from Mexico not knowing any English, went through the program, and now tested at the third grade level on the California Achievement and SPACHE tests. The film concludes with other students involved in the pilot program and their scores on the CAT and SPACHE tests.

The Devonian Elementary School Library: An Experiment in Quarters and Organization

Description: This silent film documents the activities of librarians, educators, and students using the library at Devonian Elementary School in Andrews, Texas. Title cards are included and are shown here parenthetically. The film begins with children entering the school building ("A School Day Begins" and "Let Us Follow These Three Pupils"). Children enter a library and classroom ("The Library Has Open Sides") and an unidentified person makes marks on a library floor plan. Students demonstrate the process of checking out books ("There is a self-charging system of circulation") with close ups of the library checkout card for "The Book of Indians." Children read and check out books and a teacher checks out a film strip and projector ("Fines and Dates Due are Eliminated"). Back in the classroom, the librarian teaches the Dewey Decimal Classification system ("An Index to the decimal classification is used in lieu of a subject catalogue") and a librarian helps children find books on horses and North American Indians. There are close-ups of a checkout card for "Mickey's Magnet" by Franklyn Branley checked out by Lynda Slover as well as checkout cards for "Maple Sugar for Windy" and "Putt-Putt Skipper" ("Titles are given an emphasis in shelving and cataloguing"). A librarian demonstrates how to search the card catalog and students are given assignments. Children in the library return, check out, and read books "("Books are marked with a color code indicating reading difficulty"). At the end of the day children leave the building ("The Last Bell Rings") and the American flag is lowered in front of the building ("A School Day Ends").

North Texas State University Center for Studies in Aging (MP1545)

Description: This short film promotes the North Texas State University (NTSU) Center for Studies in Aging, established in 1967 by Hiram J. Friedsam, Cora Martin, and Herbert Shore with an grant from the Administration on Aging. The film discusses the institution's goal to prepare students for service to older persons. Students are seen in classrooms, viewing a slide show, and working in real-life situations. Cora Martin speaks about the success of students who graduated from this program.
