Scandals

Description: This video was created from a digitized 35 mm filmstrip and vinyl record used by the National Republican Congressional Committee in their campaign for Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon in the 1952 presidential election. The presentation tallies cases of "dishonesty and corruption" under President Harry S. Truman in the departments Agriculture, Internal Revenue Services, Defense, Justice, Commerce, State, Treasury, and Interior. The presentation also discusses scandal and corruption in the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC), the United States Post Office, the Federal Housing Agency, Office of Price Stabilization, Veteran's Administration, Maritime Commission, Atomic Energy Commission, and the Democratic National Committee. The presentation argues that gambling, drug use, and juvenile delinquency can be traced back to the White House and lists numerous people associated with the Truman administration and Democratic National Committee who have been involved in scandal and corruption including Tom Pendergast, Harry Vaughan, Matthew Connelly, William M. Boyle, Jr., James P. Finnegan, Loretta Young, Frank Erickson, and Alger Hiss.

Description: This video is composed of digitized 35 mm slides related to the North Texas State University (now UNT) media library services and functions. The slides include images of people using audiovisual equipment and materials including film and slide projectors and televisions, images related to the library's film rental and loan program including a brochure for the Gerontological Film Collection, interior and exterior images of Willis Library and Special Collections, unidentified students and library employees engaging in activities such as answering telephones and using the library card catalog, and numerous graphics and illustrations. There is no known existing sound recording or print documentation to accompany this slide presentation and therefore this video relied on the current organization of the slides. The original digital images are retained for preservation.

Description: This video is composed of digitized slides and musical accompaniment that were used to promote the North Texas State University School of Music. The slide show consists of segments that discuss the school from the perspective of the university president, an introduction to the university community, the value of the program from the perspective of the Dean of the School of Music, the Music Library and other resources, teaching faculty, performance groups available on campus, and the availability of live performances on and off campus. The slide show begins with images and a performance by the NTSU symphony orchestra as well as images of students practicing and studying. The second segment includes images of and narration by university president C.C. "Jitter" Nolan about the value and importance of the music program and the President's Award which was given to the symphony orchestra as conducted by Anshel Brusilow and the One O'Clock Lab Band under the direction of Leon Breeden. In the third segment, narrator Edward Baird discusses the student community and programs accompanied by images of students on campus, students painting, and students in the university lounge. In the fourth segment, Dean of the School of Music Marceau Meyers speaks about the expanding practice, performance, and recording spaces and the Music Library located in Willis Library and directed by Morris Martin. In the fifth segment, Baird discusses the program's teaching faculty with accompanying images of Eugene Conley, Adolfo Odnoposoff, Anshel Brusilow, Robert Ottman, William Latham, Martin Mailman, Merrill Ellis, Michael Collins, Cecil Adkins, Edward Rainbow, David McGuire, Robert Winslow, and Leon Breeden. Teaching English in Kindergarten (MP 1543)

Description: This educational film demonstrates educational techniques for teaching English to Spanish-speaking students in Kindergarten with a focus on students of Mrs. Guerra at the Ford Elementary School in Pharr, Texas. These techniques can be found in the teacher's manual, "Teaching English Early," which is part of the set of materials in the Region One Curriculum Kit (ROCK). This film shows the students and Mrs. Guerra participating in language exercises.

Teaching Reading to Spanish Speakers (MP 1544)

Description: This educational film concerns educational techniques for teaching Spanish-language kindergarten students how to read in English. Techniques include teaching children to read in Spanish before learning to read in English. The film discusses a 3-year pilot program to teach these techniques at the Lamar School in Edinburg, Texas, which began in 1969. Kindergarten and first grade teachers Marcelia Reyes, Ninfa Guerra, Eva Corona, and Christina Chavez discuss their positive experiences with the bilingual education method discussed in the film. The narrator introduces Jacinto Lopez, a child who came from Mexico not knowing any English, went through the program, and now tested at the third grade level on the California Achievement and SPACHE tests. The film concludes with other students involved in the pilot program and their scores on the CAT and SPACHE tests.
