11.424 Ghz Stripline Transversal Filter for Sub-Picosecond Bunch Timing Measurements

Description: Measurement of time-of-arrival or instantaneous longitudinal position is a fundamental beam diagnostic. We present results from a stripline transversal periodic coupler structure which forms the heart of a sub-ps beam timing detector. This filter structure approximates a sinx/x response in the frequency domain which corresponds to a limited pulse length response in the time domain. These techniques have been used extensively in beam feedback systems at 3 GHz center frequencies with operational … more

S-11 and S-20 photocathode research activity. Rev. 1

Description: The S-1 semi-transparent photocathode is the only one that can be used to study the 1.06 ..mu..m neodynium laser pulses of less than 10 ps duration. We first reviewed the recent results obtained at the Paris Observatory (research sponsored by the CEA), and then we tried to determine the role of the main constituents and their contributions in photoemission.

The 12-GeV/c beam transfer and absorber lines for the Superconducting Super Collider

Description: The beam optics of the 12-GeV/c proton beam transfer line between the Low Energy Booster (LEB) and the Medium Energy Booster (MEB) at the Superconducting Super Collider is presented. The beam is extracted from the LEB vertically and is injected into the MEB through a vertical Lambertson magnet and a horizontal kicker. The beamline has high flexibility for amplitude and dispersion function matching. Effects of various errors in the transfer line are studied, and a beam position correction scheme… more

12" SODIUM FLOW CONTROLLER. PERMANENT MAGNET COUPLING. MAGNETIC CALCULATION MANUFACTURE AND TEST RESULTS

Description: In order to retain the hermetic feature of the sodium flow controller, magnetic flux linkage of a permanent magnet coupling is used to transmit the torque produced by the operator through the pressure wall. Magnetic calculations, manufacture, and testing of this magnet coupling are described. (M.C.G.)

13-Watt Curium-Fueled Thermoelectric Generator for Hard Lunar Impact Mission. Final Report-Subtask 5.8

Description: Results of a conceptual design study for a curium powered thermoelectric generator of minimum size and weight which is capable of sustaining hard impact is presented. The generator produces a minimum of 13 watts of d-c power at 3 volts, and weighs 6.2 pounds excluding shielding. (J.R.D.)

14-MeV Neutron Generator Used as a Thermal Neutron Source

Description: One of the most important applications of the general purpose Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNPS and MCNPX) codes is neutron shielding design. We employed this method to simulate the shield of a 14-MeV neutron generator used as a thermal neutron source providing an external thermal neutron beam for testing large area neutron detectors developed for diffraction studies in biology and also useful for national security applications. Nuclear reactors have been the main sources of neutrons used for scien… more

15 KJ FLASH LAMP, POWER CONDITIONING UNIT DESIGNED FOR SAFTY, RELIABILITY & MANUFACTURABILITY*

Description: A 15kJoule, Flash Lamp Power Conditioning Unit has been successfully designed, developed, and deployed in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Preamplifier Modules (PAM). The primary design philosophy of this power conditioning unit (PCU) is safety, reliability, and manufacturability. Cost reduction over commercially equivalent systems was also achieved through an easily manufactured packaging design optimized to meet NIF requirements. While still maintaining low cost, the PCU design includes a… more

O(18) revived

Description: We present an O(18) theory which is pertubatively unifiable and which accounts for the absence of right-handed families in the low-energy world. The model gives rise to dramatic predictions for proton decay and for the Z/sup 0/ width.

20-100 keV K(alpha) X-Ray Source Generation by Short Pulse High Intensity Lasers

Description: We are studying the feasibility of utilizing K{alpha} x-ray sources in the range of 20 to 100 keV as a backlighters for imaging various stages of implosions and high areal density planar samples driven by the NIF laser facility. The hard x-ray K{alpha} sources are created by relativistic electron plasma interactions in the target material after a radiation by short pulse high intensity lasers. In order to understand K{alpha} source characteristics such as production efficiency and brightness as… more

A 20 ampere shunt regulator for controlling individual magnets in a seriesed string

Description: At the CEBAF accelerator, groups of dipole magnets are often connected together in series and powered from a single large constant-current regulated D-C supply, referred to locally as a {open_quotes}box{close_quotes} supply. Besides the economy realized, this configuration promotes correct field tracking of all elements of a beam transport channel. However, it is often desirable to vary the current in one element of a string independently of the others, particularly at the entrance and exits of… more

20 TeV collider lattices with low-. beta. insertions

Description: A lattice containing insertions designed for collisions of 20 TeV proton beams at crossing points having beta values of two meters or less is presented. The machine would use high-field double bore superconducting magnets, with opposite focusing action on the two beams passing through each quadrupole. Hence the focusing pattern in the insertions is antisymmetric about the crossings. The beams, separated by 16 cms in the arcs are made colinear by dipoles common to both beams and then focused to … more

21-PWR Waste Package Side and End Impacts

Description: The objective of this calculation is to determine the structural response of a 21-Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) spent nuclear fuel waste package impacting an unyielding surface. A range of initial velocities and initial angles between the waste package and the unyielding surface is studied. The scope of this calculation is limited to estimating the area of the outer shell (OS) where the residual stress exceeds a given limit (hereafter ''damaged area''). The stress limit is defined as a fracti… more

24-CHANNEL GEOPHONE ARRAY FOR HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL BOREHOLES

Description: This report describes the technical progress on a project to design and construct a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. One issue related to sensor placement is addressed in this report: the method for clamping the sensor once it is emplaced in the borehole. If the sensors (geophones) are not adequately coupled to the surrounding rock mass, the resu… more

24 M Meteorological Tower Data Report Period: January--December, 1994

Description: This report was prepared by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It summarizes meteorological data collected at the 24 meter tower at the Nevada Test Site Hazardous Material Spill Center (HAZMAT) located at Frenchman Flat near Mercury, Nevada, approximately 75 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The tower was originally installed in July, 1993 to characterize baseline conditions for an EPA sponsored experimental research program at the HAZMAT.

25. anniversary of the 1973 oil embargo: Energy trends since the first major U.S. energy crisis

Description: The purpose of this publication is not to assess the causes of the 1973 energy crisis or the measures that were adopted to resolve it. The intent is to present some data on which such analyses can be based. Many of the trends presented here fall into two distinct periods. From 1973 to the mid-1980`s, prices continued at very high levels, in part because of a second oil shock in 1979--80. During this period, rapid progress was made in raising American oil production, reducing dependence on oil i… more
