Vertical coherent instabilities in bunched particle-beams

Description: The purpose of this paper is to study the vertical coherent instabilities which occur in bunched particle beams. The problem is complicated by the fact that the velocity of a single particle in a bunch is not constant, but rather consists of an equilibrium velocity and an oscillation about that. This synchrotron oscillation occurs at a frequency which is in general much less than the other characteristic frequencies of the system: the revolution frequency and the transverse betatron frequencies… more

Vertical Distribution of Calcite at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as an Indicator of Flow Through a Thick Unsaturated Zone

Description: Meteoric water percolating through 500 to 700 m of hydrologically unsaturated felsic tuffs provides a mechanism for release and transport of radionuclides from a potential high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Modern flow through the unsaturated zone (UZ) is low (probably <20 mm/year) and has not been observed directly. However, calcite formed from water percolating through fracture and lithophysal cavities over the last 12.8 million years provides, in part, a ti… more

Vertical Drop of the Naval SNF Long Waste Package On Unyielding Surface

Description: The purpose of this calculation is to determine the structural response of a Naval SNF (Spent Nuclear Fuel) Long Waste Package (WP) subjected to 2 m-vertical drop on unyielding surface (US). The scope of this document is limited to reporting the calculation results in terms of maximum stress intensities. This calculation is associated with the waste package design; calculation is performed by the Waste Package Design group. AP-3.12Q, Revision 0, ICN 0, Calculations, is used to perform the calcu… more

The Very deep hole concept: evaluation of an alternative for nuclear waste disposal

Description: One proposal for disposing of radioactive waste is to put it in drill holes or mined cavities so deep that the waste would be effectively isolated from the surface. Even if radioisotopes escaped from the disposal canister, they would be removed from the circulating groundwater system by sorption and/or chemical reaction in their transit on very long paths to the surface. This report summarizes the feasibilities and costs of making deep holes and deep mine shafts; estimates probable technologica… more

Very extended shapes in 108Cd: evidence for the occupation of 'hyper-intruder' orbitals

Description: High-spin states in {sup 108}Cd were studied following the reaction {sup 64} Ni({sup 48}Ca,4n) at a beam energy of 207 MeV. Gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. Two rotational bands have been observed at very high angular momentum. Measurements of fractional Doppler shifts yielded lower limits for the quadrupole moments and showed that the observed structures are at least as deformed as the superdeformed structures e.g. in the A {approx} 150 region, and possibly exceed a 2:1 ax… more

A VERY Informal Note on Cooling Pbars from the Main Injector

Description: For the Accelerator Upgrade (Phase I), we have chosen to upgrade the cooling in the following ways: (A) Increasing the existing 800 W system to 1600 W. (B) Adding momentum cooling (2x reduction in {Delta}p). (C) Increasing the electrode gap by {radical}(30/20). The electrode gap increase makes the yield greater at the price of reducing the cooling efficiency. The performance of the cooling system has been calculated in the approximation that the cooling process can be described by a Fokker-Plan… more

A very-low-Q diffractometer for an advanced spallation source

Description: Proposals to build new, more powerful spallation sources and the introduction of advanced moderator concepts will result in neutron sources that are 20 times more luminous than the brightest available today. These developments provide opportunity and challenge to expand the capabilities of present low-Q instruments using new designs. A particularly interesting case is the design of an instrument capable of measurements to ``very low`` momentum transfer, say Q {approx} 0.0007 {Angstrom}{sup {min… more
