Aging of Al-Li Alloys - Part I

Description: Technical report outlining experiments on aluminum-lithium alloys. From Abstract: "Aluminum-lithium alloys are subject to precipitation from solid solution, and may be age hardened by the same techniques used for more common aluminum alloys. Spherical particles of precipitate were observed with the electron microscope in 1.5% and 2.8% Al-Li alloys after aging for times comparable to those required to produce maximum hardness. Rod-shaped particles that were oriented parallel to either the (110) … more

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron

Description: Abstract: An analysis of the lid tank neutron data for Pb-H2O and Fe-H2O is made. "Effective" fast neutron cross sections for the metals are obtained. This is based on the "one collision theory" of shielding. Values are 3.4 barns for Pb and 2.0 barns for Fe. These compare very well with those obtained by Albert and Welton based on other lid tank data and another method of calculation.

Analysis of Spurious Modes in Magnet Power Supply

Description: "The resonant frequencies of the magnet power supply are investigated. It is found that there are eleven resonant modes in addition to the desired mode of operation with six additional resonant frequencies. From measurements of the choke model, it appears that the frequencies of some of the spurious modes may lie in the same range as the desired mode of operation."

Annie Laurie Prospect, Santa Cruz County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Annie Laurie 'cranium Prospect, in the Oro Blanco district of southern Arizona, is located in the southwest quarter of Sect. 3, T233, R=13. The nearest United States post office is Nogales, about 25 miles east, and the nearest settlement is Ruby, a nearly abandoned mining camp about 3 miles north. Access to the Ruby area is by gravel road from US highway 39 at Kinsley or Nogales. The Ruby quadrangle (1940) includes the area surrounding the prospect.

Betatron Oscillations and Equilibrium Orbits in Terms of Amplitude and Phase Functions

Description: "Formulas are given to express the general particle trajectory and the equilibrium orbit for a slightly disturbed synchrotron in terms of the amplitude and phase functions for the ideal machine. If these functions are known, orbit computations can be carried out by simple integration procedures. The formalism is expected to be useful especially for considerations such as beam alignment or generation of an external electron beam. Some equations given earlier are repeated for completeness."

Calorimetric Calibration of a Graphite Walled, Cavity-Type Ionization Chamber

Description: Technical report outlining cavity-type ionization chambers with graphite walls that are used to measure heat dissipation in the graphite reflector of the MTR mock-up. Studies the relationship between the ionization occurring in the chamber and the heat generated in the surrounding graphite medium. [From Abstract]

Capture - Positron Ratios for Allowed and First-Forbidden Transitions

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing capture positron ratios. As stated on page 1, "the purpose of this report is to present aids for the simple determination of the relative probabilities of K-electron capture and positron emission for allowed and first-forbidden transitions" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

The Chelate Process, IV. Process Flow Involving o-Dichlorobenzene as the Solvent for TTA

Description: Comparative studies of a series of halogenated solvents, as carriers for TTA in the chelate process for plutonium extraction, indicate that ortho-dichlorobenzene most nearly satisfies the requirements that are set forth. A complete process design is presented for use with this solvent, and flow data and equipment capacities are given for dissolver solution and for uranium-free fission product solution as alternate feeds to the process.

Corrosion of Aluminum and Beryllium by MTR Canal Water

Description: Introduction: "In the early operation of the WTR severe canal corrosion of dummy fuel assemblies and a beryllium A-piece caused a great deal of concern as to the possible effects of long-time canal storage on such elements. A short-term experimental program was started to determine the causes of this corrosion and to correct them before any irradiated fuel elements had to be stored in the canal. The results of this program are presented here."
