100 Areas, February 5--February 11

Description: This report gives the weekly status for the B, D, and F piles. Also given is the reactivity status at the end of the week for each pile. Process water control and pressure drop studies are discussed. Finally a brief discussion is given of the graphite expansion problem.

100 Areas, January 1 through January 7, 1946

Description: During this period the B Pile operated at its assigned power level of 25 MW below rated level, except for 10 hours on January 5. The operating level of the D Pile remained at 25 MW below rating. The rate gain in excess reactivity during equilibrium operation has been about 1.8 inhours/day. On January 1, the power level of the F Pile was dropped to 25 MW below rating from its previous rated level. Rod A was in a favorable position to make a determination of the reactivity coefficients at the tim… more

100 Areas, January 15 through January 21

Description: This report gives the weekly progress for the B, D, and F piles. The report also gives a brief discussion of the following activities: process water control and pressure drop studies; purging of D, B, and F piles; slug corrosion studies; tube corrosion studies; thimble corrosion studies; and graphite expansion studies.

100 Areas, January 29 through February 4, 1946

Description: The B Pile operated 25 MW below rated power level without interruption during the week. The D Pile was shut down on January 29. During the shutdown 103 tubes were discharged. The shut down lasted for 15 hours. During operation after the shut down power was reduced to meet graphite temperature restrictions. The F Pile was run steadily throughout the week at 25 MW below rated level. Iron content in the process water averaged 0.015, 0.011 and 0.010 ppm at B, D, and F Areas, respectively. Examinati… more

100 Areas, July 23 through July 29. For technical progress letter number 108

Description: The weekly progress for D and F piles is given. Status of the test to determine the cause of white deposits on the horizontal control rods of the F pile is given. Also discussed are studies of process water control and pressure drop, corrosion, and graphite expansion. Test results indicate that graphite expansion has not seriously limited discharge of process tubes.

100 Areas technical activities report -- Physics, November 1946

Description: This report divides the activities for November into three sections: D Pile; F Pile; and general physics. During November the D Pile was down twice for regularly scheduled shutdowns. Two scram occurred during the month, both of short duration. Five Special Request 15 tubes were discharged and recharged with Special Request 15. Some 13 inhour of reactivity were gained during the month. Vertical rod thimbles, 10 through 22, were tested. A Production Test was performed to determine the reactivity … more

100 Areas technical activities report -- Physics, October 1946

Description: The D Pile was down five times for scheduled shutdowns. The fifth shutdown was of short duration for the purpose of discharging temporary ``P`` columns. Details of the shutdowns are given. Three new bismuth columns were established, Special Requests were charged into seven tubes and three Special Requests were discharged. Three tubes were charged with four-inch slugs. The power level of the F Pile has been corrected for the discrepancy noted last month. Material for irradiation under the Specia… more

100 Areas technical activities report - physics, September 1946

Description: The Pine unit was down four times during the month. These were all regularly scheduled shutdowns. Times down vary from 16.9 hours to 19.2 hours. A total of 33.4 tons of metal was discharged. The galvano-meter chamber in experimental hole {open_quotes}A{close_quotes} was replaced. One Special Request was discharged and three tubes have been loaded with Special Request samples. A new bismuth column has been established. Some difficulty has been experienced with high temperatures of both tube exit… more
