Analog-Model Simulations for Secondary Canal Controls and Forward Pumping Water-Management Schemes in Southeast Florida

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate, through electrical analog model simulation, the effects of two specific water-management proposals in Dade County. Proposal one is the installation of a secondary control on Snake Creek Canal and proposal two is the forward pumping scheme.

Analysis of Selected Benthic Communities in the Florida Everglades with Reference to Their Physical and Chemical Environment

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation is to document the types of aquatic benthic organisms found within the Everglades and to determine the extent to which the chemical and physical character of surface water and bottom materials affect their distribution and community structure.

Chemical, Physical, and Radiological Quality of Selected Public Water Supplies in Florida, November 1977-February 1978

Description: Abstract: Virtually all treated public water supplies sampled in Florida meet the National Inter-Primary and Proposed Secondary Drinking Water Regulations. These findings are based on a water-quality reconnaissance of 129 treated public supplies throughout the State during the period November 1977 through February 1978. While primary drinking water regulation exceedences were infrequent , lead, selenium, and gross alpha radioactivity in a very few water supplies were above established maximum c… more

A Digital Model of the Floridian Aquifer, North of Tampa, Florida

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to describe the development and calibration of a regional digital model of the Floridian aquifer in the Tampa Bay area. This model can be used to provide regional analyses of the effects of present and proposed pumping from the Floridian aquifer.

Evaluation of a Proposed Connector Well, Northeastern DeSoto County, Florida

Description: Abstract: At a 24,000-acre citrus grove, a connector well is proposed as a resource management tool for capturing water normally lost through evapotranspiration and by excess runoff. Such a well would connect the surficial sand aquifer with the deep, highly transmissive limestone Floridan Aquifer. Because of natural head differences, water would move by gravity flow from the sand into the Floridan Aquifer, thus replenishing water withdrawn for irrigation from the Floridan Aquifer. A 70-acre mar… more

Experimental Study of Artificial Recharge Alternatives in Northwest Hillsborough County, Florida

Description: Abstract: Extensive water withdrawal from Floridian aquifer in the urban Tampa Bay area has induced leakage from the overlying surficial aquifer adversely effecting the water table and lake levels. Artificial recharge could reduce the impact of these adverse effects. Four experiments were conducted to investigate possible recharge alternatives; sinkhole recharge, water-spreading, connector wells, and subsurface-tile drainage to a deep well. Experiments indicate that all four methods can be effe… more

Geohydrologic Evaluation of a Landfill in a Coastal Area, St. Petersburg, Florida

Description: Purpose and scope: This reports presents the results of a 2-year investigation by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of St. Petersburg, to evaluate geohydrologic conditions at a landfill in a coastal area. The report defines and describes the geologic and geohydrologic units underlying the landfill, and examines the controls these units exert on the flow and quality of surface and ground water in the area. The study increases the understanding of the geohydrologic aspects … more

Hydrologic Relations Between Lakes and Aquifers in a Recharge Area near Orlando, Florida

Description: Abstract: The three lakes investigated gain water- from adjoining water-table aquifer and lose water to Floridan aquifer by downward leakage. Net seepage (net exchange of water between lake and aquifers) can be estimated by equation S = AX + BY, where S is net seepage, X represents hydraulic gradient between lake and water-table aquifer, A is lumped parameter representing effect of hydaulic conductivity and cross-sectional area of materials in flow section of water-table aquifer, Y is head diff… more
