3D metal forming applications of ALE techniques

Description: A three-dimensional arbitrary Lagrange-Eulerian (ALE) code is being developed for use as a general purpose tool for metal forming analyses. The focus of the effort is on the processes of forging, extrusion, casting and rolling. The ALE approach was chosen as an efficient way to deal with the large deformations and complicated flows associated with these processes. A prototype version of the software package, ALE3D, exists and is being applied to the enumerated processes. It is a finite element … more

Advanced Photon Source Activity Report 2003: Report of Work Conducted at the APS, January 2003-December 2003, Synchrotron x-ray diffraction at the APS, Sector 16 (HPCAT)

Description: We present here the summary of the results of our studies using the APS synchrotron beamline IDB Sector 16 (HPCAT). Optical calibration of pressure sensors for high pressures and temperatures: The high-pressure ruby scale for static measurements is well established to at least 100 GPa (about 5% accuracy), however common use of this and other pressure scales at high temperature is clearly based upon unconfirmed assumptions. Namely that high temperature does not affect observed room temperature p… more

Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy of Pu Alloys

Description: The characterization of microstructural changes in Pu-Ga alloys resulting from storage and aging phenomena is an important technical challenge to the nuclear Stockpile Stewardship program. We have identified at least two age-related phenomena that may occur in Pu alloys, dimensional changes due to the initial transient, helium accumulation, and void swelling, and phase instability. The initial transient is a well-known effect that results from the initial cascade damage. This form of dimensiona… more

Advanced Waveform Simulation for Seismic Monitoring Events

Description: Abstract We conduct a detailed test of a recently developed technique, CAPloc, in recovering source parameters from a few stations against results from a large broadband network in Southern California. The method uses a library of 1D Green’s functions which are broken into segments and matched to waveform observations with adjustable timing shifts. These shifts can be established by calibration against a distribution of well-located earthquakes and assembled in tomographic images for predicting… more

Airship Model Tests in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel

Description: This report presents the results of wind tunnel tests conducted to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of airship models. Eight Goodyear-Zeppelin airship models were tested in the original closed-throat tunnel. After the tunnel was rebuilt with an open throat a new model was tested, and one of the Goodyear-Zeppelin models was retested. The results indicate that much may be done to determine the drag of airships from evaluations of the pressure and skin-frictional drags on models tested at… more

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.
