Fatigue resistance of duralumin

Description: Where, in the following report, mention is made of fatigue, it always refers to the weakening of the material produced by rapidly changing stresses below the point of elasticity. The alternating stress was obtained by a test bar which was held at one end and subjected to rotation. Most of the tests were conducted on connecting rods.

Description: A historical sketch of duralumin is presented, especially in regards to its manufacture by various countries. The properties of duralumin are discussed and strength characteristics listed. Increasing the hardness of duralumin by tempering is discussed as well as the uses of the metal.

A method for the instantaneous determination of the velocity and direction of the wind

Description: The laboratory instruments, which we often constructed with makeshift means, gave encouraging results and showed that they could satisfactorily meet the required conditions. By limiting ourselves to the employment of hot wires of 0.05 mm (0.002 in.) diameter, we obtained instruments which faithfully followed all the wind fluctuations of over 0.1 second and even much more rapid variations without any very great error.

Theoretical and experimental study of ignition lag and engine knock

Description: The author believes, on the basis of experimental ignition-lag data, that the character of a fuel cannot be stated in terms of a single constant (such as octane or cetane number) but that at least two and generally three constants are required. Thus no correlation between knock ratings can be expected if in one set of tests the charge temperature was varied while in the other the charge pressure was varied. For this reason, he favors knock rating being based on an equation characterizing the ignition lag of the fuel as a function of pressure and temperature of the charge.

Some principles governing the establishment of meteorological stations along air routes

Description: The organization of a meteorological service for an air route involves the solution of two distinct problems: distribution and grouping of meteorological stations and communications. Experience gained in the establishment of two lines, Paris-Warsaw and Constantinople-Bucharest enables us to establish certain principles, which may be of interest to note here.

Maps and navigation methods

Description: Different maps and scales are discussed with particular emphasis on their use in aviation. The author makes the observation that current navigation methods are slow and dangerous and should be replaced by scientific methods of navigation based on loxodromy and the use of the compass.

Joukowski wings

Description: To sum up, Professor Joukowski's theory of supporting wings renders it possible to calculate the coefficient of lift in terms of the angle of attack, and Prandtl's coefficient of induced drag and the correction of the angle of attack in terms of the disposition and aspect ratio of the wings.

Resume of the activities of the Aeronautical Experimental Institute, Rome, during the months of May, June, July and August 1921

Description: This report is a listing of the different studies conducted by the Institute in May thru August of 1921. The aerodynamical section studied: the aerodynamical characteristics of a very thick concave-convex wing; the disturbance caused in a tunnel by the presence of a disk, placed in relation with a transversely infinite barrier; vertical pressure in a wing of low head resistance; the drag caused by two small doors in the sides of the fuselage. Some other studies conducted by the Institute included: depressions in the interior of the model of a wing; the influence of a conical casing fitted with helicoidal flanges centered on the hub of the propeller; the influence of the velocity of translation on the aerodynamical effects of the propeller; and the influence of a honeycomb placed in the tunnel.

Description: In short, the "politics of aviation" lies in a few propositions: the need of having as large a number of fields as possible and of sufficient area; the utilization of the larger part of the existing military fields; the selection of uncultivated or unproductive fields, whenever technical conditions permit; ability to disregard (save in exceptional cases) objections of an agricultural nature.

Propeller tests on airplanes

Description: In order to determine the efficiency of a propeller as accurately as possible, its revolution speed, thrust and power absorbed must be measured during flight. Unfortunately, these measurements can only be made with very complicated equipment. To surmount this problem the testers contented themselves with approximate results obtainable in two or three hours of flight.

The efficiency of a wind tunnel

Description: If, by some means, a steady state of motion of a perfect fluid were established in an ideal wind tunnel, there would be no losses, and the motion would persist indefinitely. In the actual tunnel, the function of the motor-fan group is overcome by the total loss of head in the tube due to friction and eddies.
