Considered Lake Erie-Lake Ontario Waterway: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Report describing the results of studies meant to provide "determination of the most functional and economical location for a lock in the vicinity of Buffalo, N. Y., and evaluation of navigation conditions at the entrance to an overland canal joining the American channel of the Niagara River northwest of North Tonawanda, N. Y." (p. ix).

Improvements for Murrells Inlet, South Carolina: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Final report of a project for the improvement and stabilization of Murrells Inlet, near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A model study was performed to aid in preconstruction planning and design of structural solutions to the problem of providing a stabilized channel of sufficient depth and width with provisions for sand bypassing.

Mission Bay Harbor, California, Design for Wave and Surge Protection and Flood Control: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore b… more

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Abstract: "Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of Isabella Dam Spillway to determine the adequacy of proposed spillway, dam, and channel improvements. The model reproduced an area of the reservoir 800 ft wide by 1,100 ft long, the spillway, and the entire length of the exit channel. Unsatisfactory flow conditions were observed in the vicinity of the spillway crest due to approach conditions to the spillway. Large cross waves, present in the exit channel just downstream of the spillway, r… more

Flood Protection Plans for Cumberland, Maryland & Ridgeley, West Virginia: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Report of a hydraulic model investigation "to determine the most economical method of providing protection for Cumberland and Ridgeley against floods somewhat greater than the flood of March 1936 Specifically, the model was used to determine: the proper sections and grades of channels required to pass the design flood with maximum reductions in flood stages; the minimum heights of levees and walls; and the channel treatment required at bridges to insure the safe passage of floodwaters with min… more

Surges in Southern Outfall Sewer and Flow Conditions in State Fairgrounds (Western Parkway) Pumping Plant, Louisville, Kentucky: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Report of findings from various tests: "Model investigations of the surges occurring in sewer lines and of the flow conditions in a typical pumping plant, used to dispose of drainage during high river stages, were conducted as a part of the local flood protection project for Louisville, Kentucky. Studies conducted on a 1:32 scale simplified model of the Southern Outfall Sewer provided general information on the relative amount of relief from surges to be expected from the pumping station and ma… more

Prototype Evaluation of Bay Springs Lock Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, Mississippi: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: From abstract: Prototype tests were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the 84-ft-lift Bay Springs Lock. The evaluation included analysis of the operating characteristics and hydraulic efficiency of the lock as well as a comparison of the physical and analytical model results with the prototype.

Modifications to Filling and Emptying System of Lock No. 1, Mississippi River, Minneapolis, Minnesota =: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: From abstract: The existing locks at Locks and Dam No. 1 were constructed between 1929 and 1932. Problems have been experienced with accumulation of ice and debris at the intakes, air entrapment in the culverts of the filling and emptying system, excessive turbulence in the lock chamber during filling, and hazardous conditions downstream from the locks during emptying operations.

McMillan Pumping Station, Washington, D.C.: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Abstract: This model study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of inflow conditions into an existing pump sump that would result with increased discharge capacity due to installation of the three proposed pumps and to develop modifications, if needed, within the confines of the present sump to improve flow distribution to the pump intakes.
