Description: The following report presents the results of part of a geologic study of the phosphate deposits in central Florida. The purpose of the investigative research done in Florida is to determine the geologic history of the phosphate deposits and associated sediments, in order that the distribution of phosphate and uranium will be more clearly understood.

Hydrogeology and Water Quality of Six Landfill Sites in Hillsborough County, Florida

Description: Purpose and scope: The objectives of this investigation were to describe the hydrology and geology of six landfill sites and to determine, when possible, changes in water levels due to landfill operations, the direction and extent of leachate movement, and changes in water quality in the surficial aquifer and the Floridian aquifer. The scope of this report is to evaluate pertinent data and results from six landfill site studies that have been conducted in Hillsborough County since 1969.

Experimental Study of Artificial Recharge Alternatives in Northwest Hillsborough County, Florida

Description: Abstract: Extensive water withdrawal from Floridian aquifer in the urban Tampa Bay area has induced leakage from the overlying surficial aquifer adversely effecting the water table and lake levels. Artificial recharge could reduce the impact of these adverse effects. Four experiments were conducted to investigate possible recharge alternatives; sinkhole recharge, water-spreading, connector wells, and subsurface-tile drainage to a deep well. Experiments indicate that all four methods can be effective. However, the sinkhole recharge experiment moved the greatest potential for draining the surficial aquifer. Combinations of the four methods could be used where potential exists for downward movement of water and sufficient unsaturated aquifer for water storage.
