Improved Calibration Facility

Description: Aid in redesign of the calibration facility in order to: 1. Reduce the rate of exposure for calibration personnel below 1 mr/hr; 2. Reduce the rate of exposure outside of the 3745 Building; 3. Reduce the risk of breaking radium sources; 4. Improve the efficiency of calibration procedures by: a. Allowing calibration to be done faster; b. Providing several calibration ranges which can operate simultaneously in the present space allowed; c. Allowing instrument survey work to proceed while calibrat… more

5.6 Mass Spectrographs

Description: In recent years German physicists have been making increasing use of both mass spectrographs in the stricter sense and mass spectrometers which can only measure elative isotopic abundances and use electrical methods of measurement.

About the Model of Bacterial Photosynthesis

Description: At the base of photosynthesis of green sulfur bacteria lies an oxidation-reduction reaction of transferring hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide to carbon dioxide, accomplished with the participation of light energy. Based on experiments the author concludes that chlorophyll in the process of photosynthesis plays the role of optical sensitizer.

The Absolute Yield of the Ferrous Sulfate Oxidation Reaction

Description: The absolute yield of the ferrous sulfate oxidation reaction, under the influence of ionizing radiation, has been determined. A polystyrene, parallel plate ionization chamber, filled with argon, nitrogen, or air, was used to measure the energy absorbed per unit volume of the solution through the application of the Bragg-Gray principle. The ionization current was extrapolated to zero chamber spacing. In related experiments the average ionization potential of polystyrene was determined to be 34.3… more

Acceleration Design Studies for Production of High Center-of-Mass Energies

Description: To aid in planning Brookhaven's future program in high-energy physics, we have just completed a summer study on possible experimentation with super-high-energy accelerators and with storage rings. I should like to review a few of our conclusions and to describe an experiment on coasting beams in progress at Brookhaven. First, however, to provide background for this review, I shall present a short history of the past year. During 1962, many proposals were submitted to the United States Governmen… more

The Activation of the Rare Earths by Thermal Neutrons

Description: Corresponding investigations were carried out for rare earths. Fractional estimates of intensities and rough values of the activation cross sections with thermal neutrons for all earther are listed.

The Activation of the Rare Earths by Thermal Neutrons

Description: The present knowledge of artificial radio-activity is more spotty for the rare earths than for any other region of the periodic table. The chief reason for this is the difficulty of obtaining sufficiently pure samples or at any rate such of well-known composition. Rare earthers were investigated through the activation by thermal neutrons.

Adsorption Studies on Clay Minerals. III. A Torsion Pendulum Adsorption Balance

Description: Many of the most important properties of the clay minerals are in reality properties of the complex systems clay-water. Since water enters directly into the equilibria between clays and ionic solutions, determination of the water content of the minerals under specified conditions are an obvious necessity in any complete study of these equilibria. A formulation of the thermodynamics involved indicates what information is necessary and how to take it into account. Furthermore, recent results of o… more
