Recovery of Zinc from Low-Grade and Complex Ores

Description: From Introduction: "Vocalization in retorts has been, until recently, the only commercial process of producing spelter, hence the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc smelters in regard to the following requirements: (1) Minimum percentage of zinc the ore must contain; (2) the chemical combination of the zinc in the ore; (3) the proportion present of those elements that interfere with the successful recovery of the zinc when the ore is retorted. As stated previously, and as will be shown later, a large part of the valuable mineral content of the ore is lost in effecting this concentration. As a result of the other requirements that have to be met in zinc smelting, much zinc is lost in the mining and milling of zinc ore."

Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Compression Process: Evaluation on Brackish Water

Description: From Abstract: "The Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Compression (VFVC) Process was evaluated on high salinity brackish water during the period from February 1968 through December 1969 by Colt Industries Inc., under O.S.W. Contract No. 14-01-0001-967 at Roswell, New Mexico. The 15,000 gpd VFVC test plant is mounted on a mobile trailer which was built by Colt Industries Inc. in their factory at Beloit, Wisconsin. Prior to operation at Roswell, the plant was operated at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina to check out the system and to operate the trailer on sea water." Process Description: "A simplified diagram, Figure 2, shows both the essential components of the process and flow paths of the various streams in the system. Typical heat and mass balances are shown on Figures 3 and 4."

Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants

Description: Abstract: Low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at 415 sewage-treatment plants are presented in this report. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 2 years and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 10 years. The low-flow characteristics at most sewage-treatment plants were determined by correlating baseflow measurements at the sewage-treatment plants to the concurrent daily mean flow at continuous-record gaging stations in the area. The accuracy determined by the standard error of estimate for the 10-year low flow ranged from 18 percent at continuous-record gaging stations to 70 percent when only three base-flow measurements were available. The standard error of 70 percent is larger than anticipated when the project was initiated. This was the result of extremely poor base-flow conditions during the 2-year data collection period. Additional base-flow conditions will be obtained during subsequent years which will improve the standard error somewhere between 29 and 45 percent.

Measurement and Prediction of Sediment Yields in Wisconsin Streams

Description: From introduction: This report presents practical and useful sediment-yield information for Wisconsin. Measured and estimated sediment yields are supplemented by information on suspended-sediment concentration and particle size of suspended and bed material for 84 sites in the State. To expand the usefulness of these data, an additional section in the report presents a method to estimate or predict sediment yields in ungaged streams.

Recycling Ground Water in Waushara County, Wisconsin: Resource Management for Cold-Water Fish Hatcheries

Description: Recycling water within the local ground-water system is an effective means to increase quantity and control water temperature of the water supply and to control or avoid environmental pollution. A fish-rearing facility, operated for 15 months, returned water to the local ground-water system through an infiltration pond and recycled 83 percent of its water supply. For each 100 gallons pumped the net stress on the aquifer was equivalent to withdrawing 17 gallons. Despite recycling, nutrient content and temperature of the water supply were acceptable throughout the study period. The rearing-facility nutrient output ranged from 1 to 2 pounds of nitrate-nitrogen per day, but nitrate-nitrogen levels in the water supply remained below 4 mg/1. The water temperature ranged from 7°C to 14°C. Mathematical relations developed show that acceptable nitrate-nitrogen levels and water temperatures nearly optimum for salmonid rearing could be maintained during full-scale hatchery operation.

Low-Flow Characteristics at Gaging Stations on the Wisconsin, Fox, and Wolf Rivers, Wisconsin

Description: From introduction: The purpose of the low-flow characteristics are in some instances affected by the period of record. These characteristics can vary as much as +/- 30 percent at some gaging stations depending on whether or not the severe drought of the 1930's was included in the analysis.
