North Dakota Lignite as a Fuel for Power-Plant Boilers

Description: From Introduction: "The tests described in the following report were made by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Reclamation Service, which, in connection with its Williston project, had erected a large pumping plant at Williston, N. Dak., and had installed steam boilers with furnaces designed to burn a "brown lignite" that was mined on adjacent government land. The results of the tests made at Williston, set forth in this report, show that this fuel, through generally considered unsatisfactory, may be used with fair economy under boilers that generate their full rated capacity."

Description: From introduction: This report presents, in tabular form, the results of radiometric and geologic reconnaissance made in the Craven and Coal Canyon areas during the period November 27 to December 7, 1951, in accordance with plans outlined in Trace Elements Memorandum Report 152, "The carnotite prospects of the Craven Canyon area, Fall River County, South Dakota." Assay data from the claims examined by L. R. Page and J. A. Redden are not included in this report. This work was done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Results of Core Drilling of Uranium-Bearing Lignite Deposits in Harding and Perkins Counties, South Dakota, and Bowman County, North Dakota

Description: Purpose: The main objective of the Dakota core drilling program was to determine reserves of uraniferous lignite based on chemical uranium and spectrographic determinations from unweathered samples, particularly from those areas where surface sampling of the beds during the previous field season indicated that significant deposits of uranium-bearing lignite might be present. A secondary objective was to obtain fresh samples and to measure the radioactivity of the overlying Oligocene White River and Miocene Arikaree formations from which the uranium in lignite is believed to have been derived.

Uranium-Bearing Sandstone in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The uranium mineral uranocircite, a barium uranyl phosphate, occurs in a sandstone channel in the Chadron formation of Oligocene age in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, S. Dak. A vertical section of the basal 1-foot of the channel contains 0. 25 percent uranium. There are also small amounts of metatyuyamunite (?) in the upper part of a freshwater lime stone bed in the Chadron formation and carnotite in chalcedony veins in the overlying Brule formation, also of Oligocene age.

Carnotite-Bearing Sandstone in Cedar Canyon, Slim Buttes, Harding County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: Carnotite-bearing sandstone and claystone have been found in the Chadron formation of the White River group of Oligocene age in the southern part of the Slim Buttes area, Harding County, S. Dak. The carnotite is an efflorescent yellow coating on lenticular silicified sandstone. Locally, the mineralized sandstone contains 0.23 percent uranium. The uranium and vanadium ions are believed to have been derived from the overlying mildly radioactive tuffaceous rocks of the Arikaree formation of Miocene age. Analyses of water from 26 springs issuing from the Chadron and Arikaree formations along the margins of Slim Buttes show uranium contents of as much as 200 parts per billion. Meteoric water percolating through tuffaceous rocks is thought to have brought uranium and other ions into environments in the Chadron formation that were physically and chemically favorable for the deposition of carnotite.

Geology of the High Climb Pegmatite, Custer County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The High Climb pegmatite, Custer County. S. Dak., belongs to the series of pegmatitic and granitic rocks that characterize the Harney Peak region of the southern Black Hills. It intrudes pre-CamInbriani metamorphic rocks consisting chiefly of quartz-mica schist. Along part of the pegmatite contact the country rock has been altered to a tourmaline-rich schist.

Uranium Deposits in Fall River County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: In 1951 uranium deposits containing carnotite were discovered in the southern Black Hills near Edgemont, Fall River County, S. Dak. Many carnotite deposits have since been found in sandstones in the Inyan Kara group of Early Cretaceous age, and uranium-bearing material has been discovered in the Minnelusa sandstone of Pennsylvanian age and the Deadwood formation of Cambrian age in the southern Black Hills. Ore has been produced only from the Inyan Kara group, mostly within an area of about 30 square miles along the southwest flank of the Black Hills uplift between Dewey and Hot Springs, in Custer and Fall River Counties. In addition, occurrences of uranium in other parts of the Black Hills and the surrounding area are known or reported in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks of pre-Cambrian to Tertiary age.

Tectonic Map of Western South Dakota Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

Description: From introduction: A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships may exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The map will show the distribution of faults, uranium deposits, areas of volcanic activity, and crestlines and troughs of folds.
