The Jackson Gas Field, Hinds and Rankin Counties, Mississippi

Description: From abstract: The Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin Counties, Miss., is in the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain, about 160 miles north of New Orleans and 40 miles, east of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. The gas is produced from a Cretaceous chalk from 2,088 to 2,236 feet below sea level. Overlying the chalk is the regular sequence of Tertiary rocks found in Mississippi. On the crest of the anticline in the city of Jackson the Cockfield formation of the Claiborne group is exposed, surrounded by the Jackson formation. Some Forest Hill sand of the Vicksburg group is exposed in the northwestern part of the area described. Overlapping these formations are Pliocene and Pleistocene terrace and alluvial deposits, and the entire area is covered by a blanket of less of varying thickness.

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

Description: From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."

Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1

Description: Summary: "This report provides data on the alluvial aquifer of the Lower Mississippi Valley in the area between Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Maps are presented of the Tertiary surface on which the alluvial aquifer rests as well as the geology of this surface and the areas where hydrologic recharge to the alluvial aquifer may occur. A set of piezometric-surface maps, together with hydrographs of observation wells, river stages, precipitation rates, and data on the hydrologic properties of the alluvium, makes it possible to calculate changes which take place in the aquifer. Further data are presented on the chemical quality of groundwater. The relevance of these data to engineering problems is discussed" (p. ix).
