Geothermal energy: the resource and the environment

Description: A general overview of geothermal energy is presented. The current usage, geological origin, and environmental effects of geothermal development are summarized with emphasis on the numerous facets of the resource that may be singled out by interested individuals for further study. The conclusion is made that total geothermal development will be but a small percentage of the U.S. energy requirement, but that geothermal energy is and will be regionally significant as an energy resource.

Overview of the geothermal energy development program at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Samanid ceramics and neutron activation analysis

Description: Glazed pottery known as ''Afrasiyab'' and ''Nishapur'' wares (early Islamic ceramics) are generally attributed to the Samanid dynasty (819-1005). The clay composition of Samanid wares and discarded kiln items found in situ were analyzed by NAA and the elemental composition compared with that of other sherds. 7 figures, 1 table. (DLC)

Absorption corrections for x-ray fluorescence analysis of environmental samples

Description: The discovery of a very simple and useful relationship between the absorption coefficient of a particular element and the ratio of incoherent to coherent scattering by the sample containing the element is discussed. By measuring the absorption coefficients for a few elements in a few samples, absorption coefficients for many elements in an entire set of similar samples can be obtained. (auth)

Mechanism of Excretion of a Bacterial Proteinase: Factors Controlling Accumulation of the Extracellular Proteinase of a Sarcina Strain (Coccus P)

Description: It has been known that the extracellular proteinase of Coccus P is found only in cultures grown in the presence of Ca{sup 2+}. It is now shown that this cation is required neither for synthesis, excretion, or activation of a zymogen nor as a prosthetic factor necessary for enzymatic activity. Description: Aluminum alloys 1100, 3003, 5052, and 6063 were examined for their compatibility with the proposed working fluids for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), anhydrous ammonia, Freon 22 and propane, and mixtures of these with sea water. Survey of Piledriver results and preliminary interpretation of three postshot cores in and near the cavity

Description: A summary of measured data collected by numerous agencies cooperating in the Piledriver event, is presented together with calculations based on empirical relations deduced from past events in comparable media. Of 9 relations that have been proposed to predict cavity radius, 5 result in radii accurate to <3.5%. The remainder are off by about 10 to 18%. Environmental {sup 129}I Measurements

Description: Environmental levels of {sup 129}I and natural {sup 127}I have been measured by neutron activation analysis .on samples from throughout the United States at locations near and remote from release points . Highest {sup 129}I concentrations were observed near nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. Levels of {sup 129}I above natural iodine background were observed at all locations studied. The sample data establishes baseline levels of environmental {sup 129}I for the expanding nuclear industry.
