Stratigraphy of the Mississippian System, South-Central Colorado and North-Central New Mexico

Description: From abstract: In the Sawatch, Mosquito and Front Ranges of central Colorado and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of south-central Colorado, Tournaisian beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone overlie rocks of Early Mississippian and Late Devonian age. In the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico, the oldest beds are the Tournaisian (zone 9) Espiritu Santo Formation. In west-central New Mexico, in the Magdalena, Lemitar, and Ladron Mountains, the Kelly Limestone of Tournaisian and Visean age rests unconformably on Proterozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks. This report examines the stratigraphy of this area.

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico

Description: Abstract: Dark shale and arkosic sandstone south of Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico, contain as much as 4 percent copper and 0. 01 percent uranium on the basis of a few samples recently analyzed. The deposits occur primarily in the dark shale which is about 5 feet thick and dips about 900. Potential reserves of this material are very large. Prospecting and further geologic work will be necessary, however, to evaluate possibilities of these large tonnages. If the deposits can be mined for their copper content, the uranium might be recovered as a byproduct. Detailed mapping and possibly some trenching will be undertaken by the Geological Survey in order further to evaluate the deposits.

Artificial-Recharge Experiments and Operations on the Southern High Plains of Texas and New Mexico

Description: Abstract: Experiments using highly turbid water from playa lakes for injection into the Ogallala Formation have resulted in greatly decreased yield of the recharge wells. Recharge of ground or surface water of good quality has indicated, however, that injection through wells in an effective method of recharging the aquifer. Water that is slightly turbid can be successfully injected for a period of time, but generally results in constantly declining yields and capacity for recharge. Redevelopment through pumping and surging significantly prolongs the life of recharge wells under some conditions. Surface spreading is little practiced on the High Plains, but locally may be a feasible means of artificial recharge.

Description: From abstract: Seismic waves resulting from a 5 kiloton nuclear detonation 1200 feet deep in a salt bed near Carlsbad, New Mexico were measured by strong-motion seismographs operated by the Coast and Geodetic Survey on the surface in the distance range from 0.5 to 8.8 miles and underground in a potash mine 8.7 to 11.2 miles distant.
