National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas

Description: From purpose and scope: The Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas (Fig. 1), was evaluated to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) to identify geologic environments and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Determination of uranium favorability was based on the similarity of geologic characteristics to the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) recognition criteria described in Mickle and Mathews (eds., 1978).

The 2010 Oil Spill: Criminal Liability Under Wildlife Laws

Description: This report highlights the possible ways to prosecute those who caused the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The report suggests that prosecution can be done under laws such as the ESA (Endangered Species Act) or the MMPA (Marine Mammal Protection Act) both of which provide for civil and criminal punishment. However, the most likely law to be used will be the MBTA (Migratory Bird Treatment Act) which makes it a crime to kill migratory birds. The report suggests that the MBTA would be the best method to prosecute for criminal liability.

The Turnip Aphid in the Southern States and Methods for Its Control

Description: "The turnip aphid is one of the most destructive and widely distributed pests of turnip, mustard, radish, and related crops in the United States. It causes heavy losses to growers of these crops every year, especially in the Southern States. Dust mixtures containing derris, cube, or nicotine, and sprays containing derris or cube, will control the turnip aphid when applied properly. The first application of insecticides should be made when the plants are very small, and additional applications should be made at intervals of 7 to 14 days up to the time of harvest. To provide for effective application of insecticides, the seed of susceptible crops should be planted in drills, with the rows spaced uniformly apart. The following cultural practices aid in the successful production of crops exposed to turnip aphid attack: (1) A well-prepared, fertile seedbed to produce thrifty and rapidly growing plants, (2) planting the seed in drills to permit cultivation, (3) harvesting early to shorten the period of exposure to infestation, (4) destroying crop remnants to eliminate a common sources of infestation to succeeding crops, and (5) applying a nitrogenous fertilizer to stimulate plant growth." -- p. ii

Integrated analysis of production potential and profitability of a horizontal well in the Lower Glen Rose Formation, Maverick County, Texas

Description: The U.S. Department of Energy/Morgantown Energy Technology Center (DOE/METC) awarded a contract in 1991 to Prime Energy Corporation (PEC) to demonstrate the benefit of using horizontal wells to recover gas from low permeability formations. The project area was located in the Chittim field of Maverick County, Texas. The Lower Glen Rose Formation in the Chittim field was a promising horizontal well candidate based on the heterogenous nature of the reservoir (suggested by large well-to-well variances in reserves) and the low percentage of economical vertical wells. Since there was substantial evidence of reservoir heterogeneity, it was unknown whether the selected, wellsite would penetrate a reservoir with the desired properties for a horizontal well. Thus, an integrated team was formed to combine geologic analysis, seismic interpretation, reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation, and economic assessment to analyze the production potential and profitability of completing a horizontal well in the Lower Glen Rose formation.

Effects of Ground-Water Development on the Proposed Palmetto Bend Dam and Reservoir in Southeast Texas

Description: Abstract: Ground water continues to discharge into the Navidad and Lavaca Rivers by seepage out-flow even though large amounts of ground water are pumped for irrigation. Although a reduction in streamflow probably has occurred, a complete loss of the low flow of the streams by infiltration to a lowered water table seems remote. The large ground-water withdrawals will continue to cause land-surface subsidence, which will range from 0.012 foot to more than 0.026 foot per year. A minimum of about 0.013 to 0.015 foot of annual subsidence at the upper ends of the proposed reservoir and a maximum of about 0.019 foot near the dam site can be expected. Structural failures of manmade features have not occurred from the subsidence, but regional changes in the land slope have occurred and will continue . Numerous fault traces have been mapped in the area, but most of the faults are inactive. If movement along the fault planes should occur, the vertical displacement probably will not exceed the total subsidence.

1978 Houston-Galveston and Texas Gulf Coast vertical-control surveys

Description: Comparisons between leveling surveys of different epochs are used to determine vertical displacement of permanent bench marks. Displacement of bench marks usually represents the movement of the surrounding area. In this report, the 1978 Houston-Galveston and Texas Gulf Coast releveling surveys are compared to the 1963, 1973, and 1976 releveling results. The changes in elevations of bench marks common to two or more epochs are tabulated and plotted in Appendix A. From these differences, contour maps were prepared for the 1963 to 1978 and 1973 to 1978 epochs in the 2/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ area of maximum subsidence. Annual subsidence rates computed for the 1973 to 1978 period are about 25% less in the maximum subsidence area than the rates computed for the 1963 to 1973 period.

Better Grain-Sorghum Crops
