Flight investigation of pentaborane fuel in 9.75-inch-diameter ram-jet engine with downstream fuel injection

Description: Report presenting a flight test of pentaborane fuel in an air-launched ramjet engine with a design free-stream Mach number of 1.8. The ramjet used in the investigation had a revised spray bar-flameholder configuration. Results regarding propulsive thrust and propulsive-thrust specific fuel consumption are provided.

Experimental investigation of deposition by boron-containing fuels in turbojet combustor

Description: Report presenting an investigation conducted with trimethyl borate azeotrope and pentaborane fuels in a turbojet combustor. The primary purposes of the study were to determine the effect of boron oxide deposits on the turbine-nozzle area, combustor pressure loss, temperature distribution, and combustion efficiency. Three distinct boron deposit patterns were noted in the investigation.

Performance evaluation of reduced-chord rotor blading as applied to J73 two-stage turbine 1: over-all performance with standard rotor blading at inlet conditions of 35 inches of mercury absolute and 700 degrees R

Description: Report presenting an investigation conducted to determine the overall performance of the J73 two-stage turbine with a standard rotor-blade configuration. The turbine operated with a maximum brake internal efficiency between 0.91 and 0.92 at an overall pressure ratio of about 3.4 and 120 percent equivalent design rotor speed. Results regarding the overall performance, variation of equivalent weight flow with overall pressure ratio, and effect of limiting blade loading are provided.

Preliminary investigation of the combustion of a 50 percent pentaborane - 50 percent JP-4 fuel blend in a turbojet combustor at simulated altitude conditions

Description: A preliminary investigation was conducted to determine the combustion characteristics of a fuel composed of 50 percent pentaborane and 50 percent JP-4 (MIL-F-5624A) by weight in a turbojet combustor. A combustor designed to fit the housing of a J33-A-23 turbojet engine was selected for convenience. The Heat of Combustion of Tetraethyldiborane

Description: "The net heat of combustion of a sample of tetraethyldiborane was found to be 20,400 plus or minus 130 Btu per pound for the reaction of liquid fuel to gaseous carbon dioxide, gaseous water ,and solid boric oxide. The measurements were made in a Parr oxygen bomb calorimeter and the combustion is believed to have been 99 percent complete. A more reasonable value for the net heat of combustion would therefore be 20,600 plus or minus 130 Btu per pound" (p. 1).

Preliminary investigation of combustion of diborane in a turbojet combustor

Description: Boron and its hydrides offer increased flight range relative to conventional fuels for turbojet engines. Preliminary evaluation has been made of the combustion characteristics and deposition problems resulting from burning diborone in a single, modified J33 combustor. A combustor relatively free of deposits for the limited test conditions has been developed. Three possible methods of alleviating deposits on the turbine blades are reported.

Performance evaluation of reduced-chord rotor blading as applied to J73 two-stage turbine 5: effect of inlet pressure on over-all performance at design speed and inlet temperature of 700 degrees R

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a reduced-chord multistage turbine at design speed and various turbine-inlet pressures from 12 to 40 inches of mercury absolute. At each inlet pressure, the turbine was operated over a range of overall turbine total-pressure ratios; turbine-inlet temperature was maintained at 700 degrees R. The results indicated that no appreciable effect on turbine overall performance was observed over the range of turbine-inlet total pressures investigated.

Description: Report presenting a study of the first stage performance characteristics of the two-stage turbine from the J73 turbojet engine. The reduced-chord first-stage turbine operated at a peak brake internal efficiency of over 91 percent at a stage overall pressure ratio of 1.4 and at 90 percent of the design equivalent speed. The unit exhibited high efficiency over a wide range of operating variables.

Investigation of conditions for spontaneous ignition and combustion efficiency of pentaborane in a small-scale combustor

Description: Report presenting an investigation using a small-scale ramjet combustor to determine the conditions for spontaneous ignition of pentaborane, amyl nitrate, propylene oxide, and JP-4 fuel. For the range of conditions investigated, the threshold of spontaneous ignition of pentaborane is primarily governed by temperature and is also influenced by burner length and configuration. Combustion efficiency was found to increase in burner length and blocked area of the flame holder.

Initial Performance Investigation of Pentaborane Fuel in Free-Flight Ram-Jet Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation with a ramjet utilizing pentaborane fuel in order to evaluate promising high-energy fuels under actual flight conditions. During descent, the engine accelerated to a Mach number of 1.45 when a flame-out believed due to spray-bar failure took place. Influence of boric oxide deposition on turbojet-engine operation

Description: Report presenting testing of a modified production turbojet engine using a trimethyl borate azeotrope as a fuel. Operation with this fuel for 100 minutes produced a 2-percent deterioration in engine speed and only a 1-percent increase in combustor total-pressure loss with the best engine configuration investigated. Results regarding boric oxide deposition, engine operation and performance, effect of turbine-inlet temperature, and dissipation of boric oxide deposits are provided.

Flight evaluation of the lateral stability and control characteristics of the Convair YF-102 airplane

Description: Report presenting the lateral stability and control characteristics of the Convair YF-102 airplane during flights for the NACA research program. The investigation included gradually increasing sideslips, rudder-fixed aileron rolls, rudder pulses, and trim runs at two different altitudes over the test Mach number range. The lateral handling characteristics appeared satisfactory when viewed in terms of gradually increasing sideslips.
