The Effect of Age on the Radiosensitivity of Mice

Description: Abstract: Mice of different ages ranging from 1.5 to 12 months have been exposed to gamma rays in an effort to determine the change in radiosensitivity with age. The dose necessary to cause 50% killing was determined for each age group and sex. No change in sensitivity with age was observed with either sex, although the experimental error in the case of the males was quite large. The females were found to be more resistant than the males.

Sid Magnet Model Test Results

Description: From introduction: "These data were taken on a 1/16th scale model of the magnet shown on sketch no. FS-2. The object of these measurements was to get information that would determine the final design of the full scale magnet. The one main point to be settled was whether a tapered or a cylindrical pole piece would give the largest value of Hρ for a given power input into the magnet (the cylindrical pole piece is shown in dotted lines in sketch FS-2)."

Autoxidation of Uranous Salts in Water Solution

Description: From introduction: "The fact that tetravalent uranium either in the form of solutions of its salts or, in some cases, in the dry state is readily oxidized by gaseous oxygen, has been observed by various investigators. A quantitative study of this reaction appeared to be desirable as a means of learning more about the nature of the ionic species present in uranous solutions. It was also of potential value in determining the importance of autoxidation as an undesirable side reaction involved in t… more

The Detection of Small Amounts of Fluorine in Large Amounts of Chlorine

Description: Abstract: "Tests have been developed for both the qualitative detection and quantitative determination of fluorine in chlorine. The qualitative test is made by passing the gas through manganous chloride. If the pink solid tubes brown there is greater than 0.5 percent of fluorine in the gas. The quantitative test is a modification of the Steiger and Marvin Test with oxidized titanium solution."

A Mathematical Analysis of the Calutron

Description: Abstract: "The definitions of the fundamental measures of calutron operation including enhancement, current ratio, and process efficiency are set forth with derivations of the relationships between them. An analysis of the plant process is carried out for both the tanks limited and the charge limited case. Equations are derived for plant X output and plant X utilization efficiency. Effective production is defined and the value of increment to a mass of product material in terms of effective pro… more

Recovery of Uranium From Beta Salvage Residues by Vapor Phase Chlorination With CCl₄

Description: Abstract: A simple process to recover the bulk of the uranium from ignited beta salvage residues was sought. In preliminary experiments a vapor phase chlorination with CCl₄ for about four hours followed by water and nitric acid leaching was found adequate. Recoveries are estimated at 60 to 90% of the total uranium content.

The Detection of Uranium by X-ray Spectrometry

Description: Abstract: "The possibility of detecting small quantities of uranium with an X-ray spectrometer was investigated. An X-ray spectrograph was modified by substituting a geiger counter for the photographic film. Both primary and secondary methods of excitation were studied. Radiation background of high intensity and variability limits the sensitivity of the present apparatus to 1%. Suggestions are made for increasing the sensitivity of the method."

Supplemental and Summary Report on Western Carrizo Uplift and Chuska Mountains Areas of Northern Navajo Indian Reservation Northeastern Arizona

Description: General purpose of survey: During the period 1943 and 1944, the primary purpose was to locate, describe, sample, and generally evaluate the SOM-vanadium mineralization in the western Carrizo Uplift and Chuska Mountains Areas. To this end, the areal geology of the areas, with emphasis on the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation, was mapped. The triangulation and the laying out of leased plots were supplemental parts of this work. The field work in 1945 was for the purpose of collecting add… more

Wind-tunnel investigation of end-plate effects of horizontal tails on a vertical tail compared with available theory

Description: A vertical-tail model with stub fuselage was tested in combination with various simulated horizontal tails to determine the effect of horizontal-tail span and location on the aerodynamic characteristics of the vertical tail. Available theoretical data on end-plate effects were collected and presented in the form most suitable for design purposes. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the measured and theoretical end-plate effects of horizontal tails on vertical tails, and the data indicated… more

A Study of Combustion in a Flowing Gas

Description: Note presenting the results of a preliminary study of combustion in flowing gases and apparatus for obtaining high rates of heat release per unit volume of combustion space are described. Tests were made over a wide range of fuel-air ratios, inlet-mixture velocities, and electrical heat inputs, using propane gas as the fuel. Results indicate that the greater the surface-volume ratio, or the greater the amount of heat addible to the gas stream, the greater the inlet-mixture velocity at which app… more

Application of the Method of Characteristics to Supersonic Rotational Flow

Description: "A system for calculating the physical properties of supersonic rotational flow with axial symmetry and supersonic rotational flow in a two-dimensional field was determined by use of the characteristics method. The system was applied to the study of external and internal flow for supersonic inlets with axial symmetry. For a circular conical inlet the shock that occurred at the lip of the inlet became stronger as it approached the axis of the inlet and became a normal shock at the axis" (p. 111). more

Numerical procedures for the calculation of the stresses in monocoques 3: calculation of the bending moments in fuselage frames

Description: "This report deals with the calculation of the bending moments in and the distortions of fuselage rings upon which known concentrated and distributed loads are acting. In the procedure suggested, the ring is divided into a number of beams each having a constant radius of curvature. The forces and moments caused in the end sections of the beams by individual unit displacements of the end sections are listed in a table designated as the operations table in conformity with Southwell's nomenclature… more

Tests of Cast Aluminum-Alloy Mixed-Flow Impellers

Description: "A machined mixed-flow centrifugal impeller of a relatively complex passage shape was used as a pattern to cast a number of aluminum-alloy impellers from two aluminum-base alloys (designated alloys 1 and 2) by the 'lost wax' process. An investigation was conducted to determine whether these cast impellers, could be considered satisfactory for use in compressors. The investigation included preliminary examination, physical tests, metallurgical examination, and performance tests" (p. 1).

Critical Mach Numbers of Thin Airfoil Sections with Plain Flaps

Description: Critical Mach number as function of lift coefficient is determined for certain moderately thick NACA low-drag airfoils. Results, given graphically, included calculations on same airfoil sections with plain flaps for small flap deflections. Curves indicate optimum critical conditions for airfoils with flaps in such form that they can be compared with corresponding results for zero flap deflections. Plain flaps increase life-coefficient range for which critical Mach number is in region of high va… more
