A Reversing Logarithmic DC Amplifier

Description: Purpose: Automatic recording equipment was designed for use with a high temperature Sykes experiment in which calorimetric measurements were to be made to temperatures approaching 2000* C. At such high temperatures, radiation becomes the dominant mechanism for heat transfer. The temperature differences which are used to determine the magnitude of this transfer no longer are directly proportional to it, but must be related by the Stefan-Boltzman law of radiation.

National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas

Description: From purpose and scope: The Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas (Fig. 1), was evaluated to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) to identify geologic environments and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Determination of uranium favorability was based on the similarity of geologic characteristics to the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) recognition criteria described in Mickle and Mathews (eds., 1978).

A Remotely Controlled Welding Device for Joining Stainless Steel Tubes

Description: Abstract: The design and testing of experimental equipment for remotely joining stainless steel tubing by heliarc welding is described. This apparatus consists of a modified heliarc welding torch which is hydraulically controlled to maintain constant arc voltage. A suitable arc voltage sensing and control amplifier circuit was developed for this application.

Description: From abstract: In 1948, 7,662 miles of roadside rocks and soils in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern New York were traversed with a car-mounted Geiger-Mueller counter. The observed distribution of the abnormally radioactive rocks and soils is limited to certain areas, herein called "radioactive provinces," that are separated from each other by areas of essentially nonradioactive rock.

The Colorado Formation and its Invertebrate Fauna

Description: From preface: The following review of one of the Upper Cretaceous faunas as developed in the interior region of the United States has grown out of the study of a collection of fossils found by me in Huerfano park and adjacent localities in southern Colorado. This collection, the greater part of which was obtained during the summer of 1890, proved to be especially interesting because it afforded data for the closer correlation of certain Cretaceous strata in Utah with those east of the mountains, besides adding a considerable number of new species to the fauna of the Colorado formation. Dr. C. A. White, under whose direction the field work was done, generously assigned these fossils to me for study with a view to publishing the results, and I am greatly indebted to his sympathetic aid in every phase of the work.

The Glaciation of the Yellowstone Valley, North of the Park

Description: From outline: The present paper gives a detailed account of the glaciation of the Snowy mountains and of the upper valleys of the Yellowstone, whose deposits show an unusual phase of alpine glaciation. The evidence thus far gathered shows that a large body of ice, originating in the ice sheets of the Yellowstone National Park, pushed northward, filling the upper valleys of the Yellowstone and extending down that stream 36 miles north of the park boundary.

Reconnaissance for Trace Elements in North Dakota and Eastern Montana

Description: From abstract: A reconnaissance for sources of radioactive material in North Dakota and eastern Montana was made in 1948. This reconnaissance was followed by a more detailed survey of parts of Golden Valley and Slope counties, southwestern North Dakota, in June 1949. The radioactivity of representative sections of all formations known to be exposed in the area and of three manganiferous spring deposits was determined with portable Geiger-Mueller counters. At 86 localities 82 samples were taken of these formations and also of 10 ground and surface waters.

Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey of the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Areas of Texas: Volume 1. Summary Report

Description: From introduction: Geodata International, Incorporated, conducted an airborne gamma ray and total magnetic field survey of a region of Northwest Texas which covered the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Maps. The area shown on Figure 1 was surveyed from an aircraft using large-volume radiation detectors with computer-controlled airborne equipment. Each map line was flown in an east-west direction with an average length of 120 miles. National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Durango Quadrangle, Colorado

Description: From purpose and study: The Durango Quadrangle, southwest Colorado (Fig. 1), was evaluated to identify geologic units and to delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Geologic environments were evaluated to a depth of 1500 m based on recognition criteria (Mickle and Mathews, eds., 1978) prepared for the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. A favorable environment, as defined for this program, is an environment that could contain at least 100 tons U308 in deposits with an average grade no less than 100 ppm U308 . Environments that did not meet the NURE criteria were categorized as unfavorable. Some of the subsurface and several areas of restricted access were categorized as unevaluated because insufficient data exist for proper evaluation.
