The Direct Reading Height Gage and its Applications to Inspection Work : Model 1 and Model 2

Description: The direct reading height gauge is a new and fast operating instrument designed primarily for checking hole patterns, but it can also be used for a number of other purposes as well. This report gives a brief review of what the gauge is, what it will do, and how it is operated. Speed and the elimination of most of the sources of error are its chief attributes.

Free Convection in the SIR Mark A Rotating Plugs

Description: This technical report is intended as a brief description of the free convection problem existing in the various annuli of the SIR Mark A rotating plugs. It is by no means a complete report of the plug "hot tests", but merely records some of the more significant experimental observations and presents a few of the theories and calculations made to explain the observed free convection phenomenon. The general discussion which follows is chronological. Details of analyses are relegated to the Appen… more

Gas Plated Coatings on Metals and Alloys : Progress Report No. 6 and Final Report

Description: The object of the work performed under this contract was to investigate the possibility of gas plating copper base metal with (a) pure chromium metal from chromium hexacarbonyl vapor; (b) chromium-nickel plating from a mixture of chromium hexacarbonyl and nickel tetracarbonyl. The object of the work performed during the final month was to confirm the fact that the gas plating of chromium metal and chromium-nickel laminates free from nitrides, oxides and carbides was practical.

Gas Plated Coatings on Metals and Alloys : Progress Report No. 1

Description: The object of this project is to conduct studies on the coating of metals and alloys by the gas plating process. Coatings to be studied consist of chromium on copper; alloys of nickel chromium on copper; molybdenum on stainless steel and Inconel; chromium on stainless steel and Inconel; and tungsten and molybdenum and their carbides on stainless steel and Inconel.

Progress Report on the Flotation of Uranium Bearing Minerals From Lake Athabaska Ore, Sample 43-1

Description: At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission, a 456 pound sample of Lake Athabaska ore was shipped to this laboratory by the Radioactivity Division of the Canadian Bureau of Mines. The sample was received on March 10, 1952 and given our number 43-1. Several series of flotation tests were performed on the sample.

Removal of Chloride From Congo Precipitates

Description: Uranium precipitates obtained from Congo leach liquors by an ion exchange process contained more than 0.1 percent chloride. Attempts were made to reduce the chloride content of typical precipitates by calcination of dried precipitate, releaching of dried precipitate with water, and washing of wet precipitate with water. Washing of wet precipitate with an aqueous solution of 0.25 percent Na2SO4, to prevent peptization, provided a simple solution to the problem.

Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

Description: In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Recovery of Manganese Dioxide From Rand Barren Solutions

Description: In the course of recovering uranium from Rand cyanide residues, large volumes of barren acid liquors are produced. With the flowsheets now under consideration it is not advisable to recycle such liquors and they are to be discarded. Consideration was given to the removal of manganese under conditions that would permit its recovery as MnO2.

Dissolution of Metals in Fused Fluorides

Description: In scouting tests, a number of metals used in nuclear reactor fuel elements were dissolved by 44.5-48.5-7.0 mole % ZrF4-KF-NaF fused salt at 675°C through which HF was being passed. These included type 304 stainless steel at 4 mils/hr; type 347Nb stainless steel at 7 mils/hr; thorium at 14 mils/hr; nonirradiated uranium at 17 mils/hr; zirconium at 22-35 mils/hr; titanium at 31 mils/hr; and Zircaloy-2 at 22-46 mils/hr. Only small amounts of volatile fission products formed when irradiated uraniu… more

Procedure for Annealing Operation

Description: By heating the normally cool areas of graphite to temperatures of 200°C or higher, it is evident that a substantial portion of the energy stored will be released. The physical dimension change which is associated with the radiation damage of graphite has been noted to partially recover under laboratory conditions when this amount of stored energy is released. This latter phenomenon is of prime interest in this operation. If a dimension recovery is noted on the gross structure, a solution to cer… more

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

Description: In the memorandum entitled "Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite", dated February 25, 1953, there is described an experiment conducted by Gurinsky's group to determine the energy per gram of irradiated graphite released in a 200°C anneal. Similar experiments were subsequently conducted by W. Kosiba, differing from the original in two particulars: a) Instead of two graphite samples, one normal, and one irradiated, Kosiba used only an irradiated sample which he heated first to release the stored… more

Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

Description: Radiation damage to graphite has several consequences of practical importance. The growth of graphite under radiation (Wigner's disease) in production reactors has always been a serious concern. The thermal conductivity of graphite decreases greatly with time of irradiation and is important in long range studies of reactor temperature problems.
