Compilation of yields from neutron-induced fission of /sup 232/Th, /sup 235/U, /sup 236/U, /sup 237/Np, /sup 238/U, and /sup 239/Pu measured radiochemically at Los Alamos

Description: Radiochemically measured relative fission yields have been compiled for targets of /sup 232/Th, /sup 235/U, /sup 236/U, /sup 237/Np, /sup 238/U, and /sup 239/Pu that were irradiated with neutrons, the average energies of which were in the 0.0253-eV to 14-MeV range. The yields were examined for consistency by means of the two-mode-of-fission hypothesis. The circumstances associated with inconsistencies were investigated, but the yields in questions were rejected only when good cause was found. F… more

Hydrology of some deep mines in Precambrian rocks

Description: A number of underground mines were investigated during the summer of 1975. All of them are in Precambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region. They represent a variety of geologic settings. The purpose of the investigations was to make a preliminary study of the dryness, or lack of dryness of these rocks at depth. In other words, to see if water was entering the deeper workings through the unmined rock by some means such as fracture or fault zones, joints or permeable zones. Water entering throug… more

Further evidence for the T/sup -/1/2 singularity in amorphous Kondo alloys. [Ni-Pd-P alloys containing up to 7 at. percent Mn]

Description: A T/sup -1/2/ variation of resistivity with temperature near T = 0 is found in rapidly quenched amorphous Ni--Pd--P alloys containing up to at.percent Mn, providing further evidence for the existence of this new singularity. It is argued that the new resistivity term arises from interference between multiple scattering of conduction electrons by atoms in magnetic and nonmagnetic states and is observed as a consequence of a short electron mean free path and breakdown of conservation of electron … more

Bubbles and their implications for laser-fusion

Description: Bubbles are concentrations of electromagnetic energy in the region of the critical density that force out the plasma to form a void. Since the critical density surface is cratered, absorption may be greater than a smooth surface since a larger area will be available for absorption and the reflected light will have a large probability of restriking the critical density. The distance between bubbles is several wavelengths and consequently they may encourage Rayleigh--Taylor instabilities. The thr… more

Some considerations in the splitting of interstitial frank loops formed by irradiation

Description: The splitting of interstitial loops formed by irradiation is considered in detail. It is shown that they may split to form obtuse--angled single shear faults on the intersecting (111) planes. A detailed description of the splitting is given in which the interstitial Frank loop is viewed as being made up of perfect dislocation loop and two shears. The detailed description is then considered in the context of the formation of complex loops as are observed in quenching and irradiation studies. Exp… more

Preliminary ''steam tables'' for NaCl solutions. Physical properties of the coexisting phases and thermochemical properties of the H{sub 2}O component. [80{sup 0} to 325{sup 0}C]

Description: Preliminary ''steam tables'' which contain the physical properties of vapor-saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution and the coexisting gas are given for liquid concentrations between 0 mol NaCl/kg H{sub 2{O and halite saturation at temperatures between 80{sup 0} and 325{sup 0}C. For the same conditions, the tables give the partial molal entropy, enthalpy, and volume of H{sub 2}O in the phases. The tables were calculated from parametric equations of state.

Physics with polarized beams. Report of the ANL Technical Advisory Panel. [Research with polarized proton beams]

Description: Experimental directions which will be the most useful in developing underlying theories of hadronic collisions are outlined. As a pedagogical device to accomplish this, approximate percentages of a total program which could be devoted to different areas have been quoted. Findings are presented in the form of a short basic report with several long detailed appendices. In the basic report our opinion as to the amount of polarized beam experimental effort that should be applied to the following ar… more

Currents density measurements with an ion beam probe

Description: It was shown that by the use of ion beam probing system with the proper detectors experimental expressions can be obtained for v/sub o/ = v/sub o/ (x,y,z) and v/sub d/ = v/sub d (x,y,z). It was also shown that by taking the curl of the difference between the equations, the magnetic field and consequently the plasma current density distribution can be evaluated.

Preliminary measurements of the thermal conductivity of rocks from LASL geothermal test holes GT-1 and GT-2

Description: The conductivities on a number of dry rocks have been measured in an air environment. These experimental values are probably about 10 percent lower than the in situ values. Initial attempts to prepare ''wet'' rock samples (rocks saturated with water) have so far resulted in only ''damp'' rocks. Considerable effort will be required to characterize the crack system in ''solid'' rocks and to predict the probable conductivity values for in situ conditions.

Simulation of fluid-rock interactions in a geothermal basin. Final report. [QUAGMR (quasi-active geothermal reservoir)]

Description: General balance laws and constitutive relations are developed for convective hydrothermal geothermal reservoirs. A fully interacting rock-fluid system is considered; typical rock-fluid interactions involve momentum and energy transfer and the dependence of rock porosity and permeability upon the fluid and rock stresses. The mathematical model also includes multiphase (water/steam) effects. A simple analytical model is employed to study heat transfer into/or from a fluid moving in a porous mediu… more
