Spot Diagrams for the Prediction of Lens Performance From Design Data

Description: From Abstract: "This Monograph presents an outline of the methods used at the National Bureau of Standards to predict the performance of lenses from an analysis of their designs. The technique is based on the use of spot diagrams, which are analogs of star image tests, and makes extensive use of high-speed digital computers."

Investigation of the Hydraulics of Horizontal Drains in Plumbing Systems

Description: From introduction: "In this paper, data obtained by Hunter and by the author are reported from laboratory investigations of (1) surge flow introduced into empty simply drains, (2) attenuation of surges in simple drains, (3) continuous full-section flow in simple drains under substantially steady, uniform conditions, (4) steady flow in compound drains, and (5) surge flow introduced through a branch drain into the side or top of a main drain carrying steady flow."

Calibration of Line Standards of Length and Measuring Tapes at the National Bureau of Standards

Description: From Abstract: "The methods used at the National Bureau of Standards in calibrating line standards of length and measuring tapes submitted for standardization are outlined. The equipment used is described briefly. There is a discussion of some considerations that should be given as to whether or not a standard should be submitted to the Bureau."

Creep and Drying Shrinkage of Lightweight and Normal-Weight Concretes

Description: From Scope of Investigation: "The work reported here is part of a continuing program concerning the long-term volume changes in concretes made from lightweight and normal-weight aggregates. The creep, drying-shrinkage, and strength data presented are for concretes made with 24 expanded shale lightweight aggregates and 5 natural, normal-weight aggregates. These aggregates were from widely separated geographical locations and were to be representative samples of aggregates being used in the production of structural concretes."

Determination of Total X-Ray Beam Energy With a Calibrated Ionization Chamber

Description: From Abstract: "This report describes the use of an air-filled aluminum-alloy ionization chamber to determine the energy transported by a bremsstrahlung beam with maximum photon energy in the range 6 to 170 Mev. This report can be used to construct a replica chamber to determine its absolute calibration between 6 and 170 Mev under a variety of experimental conditions."

Development of High-Temperature Strain Gages

Description: From Introduction: "An improved high-temperature gage was needed, and in an attempt to fill this need an investigation was initiated in February 1954 in the Enameled Metals Laboratory at the National Bureau of Standards. The present Monograph constitutes a final summary on this program."

Corrosion of Steel Pilings in Soils

Description: From Introduction: "In this paper are presented the results obtained to date from the inspections of steel pilings. The investigation will be continued by additional inspections of pilings in other parts if the country in order to cover a wider range of soil environments."

Calibration Procedures for Direct-Current Resistance Apparatus

Description: From Object and Scope of This Paper: "This paper describes the apparatus and procedures used at the National Bureau of Standards for the measurement of d-c resistance when an accuracy of a few parts in a million is required. The object will be to explain procedures in detail and as simply as possible, with a minimum reference to theory."

Basic Magnetic Quantities and the Measurement of the Magnetic Properties of Materials

Description: From Introduction: "The work of the Magnetic Measurements Section of the National Bureau of Standards includes (1) testing of specifically prepared test specimens intended for use as standards for checking magnetic testing apparatus (2) investigation and development of magnetic testing apparatus (3) calibration of mutual inductors, test coils, and instruments for measuring magnetic fields, and (4) investigations in the field of magnetics such as studies of phenomena associated with nuclear magnetic resonance or the selection and testing of materials suitable to be used as standards of magnetic susceptibility."

The Solar Spectrum 2935 Å to 8770 Å : Second Revision of Rowland's Preliminary Table of Solar Spectrum Wavelengths

Description: From Abstract: "An introductory text gives a detailed description of each column of the solar ledger. Tables include counts of lines of each spectrum recorded in the identification column, leading lines in the first and second spectra, and summaries of molecules and elements present in the sun. About 73 percent of the lines are wholly or partially identified. Sixty-three elements are recorded as present."

Line Parameters and Computed Spectra for Water Vapor Bands at 2.7 mu

Description: From Foreword: "This Monograph is one of a series intended to provide fundamental information required for the estimation and interpretation of atmospheric transmittance at infrared frequencies. Part I of this Monograph presents the fundamental properties of the 2.7m water vapor band in terms of line absorptions and the integrated transmittance at any frequency for infinite resolution. Part II presents examples of the "degraded" transmittance for finite resolution, as a function of the spectral slit width, concentration, and pressure with which direct observations may be compared."

Microwave Spectral Tables: Volume 3. Polyatomic Molecules With Internal Rotation

Description: From Introduction: "This volume contains data on the microwave spectra of 94 polyatomic molecules capable of exhibiting internal rotation, based upon a search of the literature up to July, 1962, but including some information of later dates."

Ideal Gas Thermodynamic Functions and Isotope Exchange Functions for the Diatomic Hydrides, Deuterides, and Tritides

Description: From Abstract: "This Monograph contains a consistent set of tables of thermodynamic properties of a large number of diatomic hydrides, deuterides, and tritides, for the ideal gas state at one atmosphere pressure. In addition to the thermodynamic properties of the molecular gases, the tables also include thermodynamic properties for chemical reactions involving the isotopic exchange of hydrogen."
