PROGRESS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF URANIUM CARBIDE-TYPE FUELS

Description: It has been corfirmed that uranium monocarbide can be prepared by reacting uranium metal powder with methane at about 650 C, and that sintered carbides of greater than 90% of theoretical density can be made. The cast density of carbides has been found to vary from 13.56 g/cm/sup 3/ for UC to 11.7 g/cm/sup 3/ for UC/sub 2/. The electrical resistivity of cast carbides has been found to vary from about 40 microhm-cm for UC to about 90 microhm-cm for UC/sub 2/ . About 500 ppm of iron or silicon has… more

Multigroup Diffusion Theory Calculations for Recent Critical Experiments

Description: In connection with the program of the measurement of eta for U/sup 233/, several critical experiments were performed with light water solutions of uranyl nitrate in an essentially bare sphere 27 inches in diameter. Results of two multigroup-diffusion-theory calculations for the above experiments are presented. Assumed cross sections, material concentrations, detailed neutron balances, and a comparison with elementary theory are included. The agreement between the calculated and experimental mul… more

Corrosion and Creep Behavior of Tantalum in Flowing Sodium

Description: The corrosion behavior of commercial tantalum in high-purity flowing sodium from 700 to 1200 deg F and the effect of sodium exposure on the creep strength of tantalum at 1200 deg F were investigated. The tests were conducted in forced-convection flow loops constructed of Type 315 stainless steel. With continuously gettered sodium systems (probably containing less than 10 ppm oxygen) operating for periods up to 50 days, weight losses sustained by 1200 deg F specimens corresponded to only about 0… more

Preliminary Testing of a Proportional Counter for Neutron Spectroscopy With Helium-3

Description: The He/sup 3/(n,p)T reaction can be utilized in a proportional counter for neutron-energy determination in the region 100 kev to 1 Mev. This has already been demonstrated and the reaction cross section in this energy region has been measured with a counter. For practical application of the counter as a spectrometer, such as in health physics work, it is desirable to increase the counter efficiency. A proportional counter utilizing an anticoincidence ring to reduce wall effect has been construct… more

INSTRUMENTATION FLOW PLAN SYMBOLS AND RECOMMENDED DRAWINGS. A STANDARD SYSTEM FOR ORNL INSTRUMENTATION APPLICATION WORK

Description: A system of symbols and identifications for processinstrumentation equipment to promote a uniformity of practice is presented. The system is for the following uses: designation and identification of instruments on flow pInns; recording specifinations, listings, requisitions, and purchase orders; indication of items on piping diagrams and other construction drawings; identification tagging of equipment; and description in technical and trade literature. The Reactivity of Uranium and Blacosolv

Description: Abstract: "Blacosolv, trichloroethylene, is used in degreasing uranium metal. Tests were made under possible industrial conditions to determine whether a hazardous reaction between uranium and Blacosolv could occur. Temperature-rise measurements showed that there was no reaction of the metal, in various states of subdivision, with Blacosolv at temperatures up to 850 F. However, a reaction was observed in tests under which the finely divided metal, wet with solvent, was subjected to a severe imp… more
