The efficiency of a wind tunnel

Description: If, by some means, a steady state of motion of a perfect fluid were established in an ideal wind tunnel, there would be no losses, and the motion would persist indefinitely. In the actual tunnel, the function of the motor-fan group is overcome by the total loss of head in the tube due to friction and eddies.

Tests of artificial flight at high altitudes

Description: If we wish to form an accurate idea of the extraordinary progress achieved in aeronautics, a comparison must be made of the latest altitude records and the figures regarded as highest attainable limit some ten years ago. It is desirable, for two reasons, that we should be able to define the limit of the altitudes that can be reached without artificial aid. First, to know to what extent the human body can endure the inhalation of rarified air. Second, the mental capacity of the aviator must be tested at high altitudes and the limit known below which he is able to make reliable observations without being artificially supplied with oxygen. A pneumatic chamber was used for the most accurate observations.

Shape and strength of seaplane under-structures with special regard to seaworthiness

Description: This report presents experiments and calculations for the purpose of determining the landing gear requirements upon the water. Moving pictures are given which furnish data and also may give both the magnitude and direction of the forces acting. Different classes of seaplanes are examined and proposals for calculation instructions are given.

Aerial navigation : on the problem of guiding aircraft in a fog or by night when there is no visibility

Description: The use of magnetic fields and wire to navigate aircraft in conditions of poor visibility is presented. This field may be considered to be derived from a double lemniscate, considered in the particular case where the origin is a double point formed from the magnetic field of the slack wire, from the field produced by the return currents and from the field due to the currents induced in the conducting mass. These fields are dephased in two ways, one in the direction of the wire, the other in a direction perpendicular to it.

Abacus giving the variation of the mean pressure of an aviation engine as a function of its speed of rotation

Description: Comparing the results of the calculations for computing the mean pressure of an aviation engine for any number of revolutions, with those of experiment, the writer, by numerous examples, shows the perfect agreement between them. This report will show that, by means of a special abacus, an engineer can instantly plot the characteristics of an engine.
