A Concise History of the Food Stamp Program

Description: The Food Stamp Program has undergone a number of major changes since its modern version was established in 1961. It is now one of the largest "welfare" programs and provides an income supplement to the food-purchasing power of more than 18 million persons each month, at a cost of nearly $7 billion annually. This report traces the history of the program from 1961 through 1979, with an emphasis on how program rules, philosophy, participation, and costs have changed over the years.

Conceptual design report for tritium liquid waste recovery system

Description: This project will provide a waste water treatment system to efficiently strip tritium from certain Mound generated waste water streams. After stripping the tritium from the water stream, the tritium will be further purified into a fully reusable form. The by-product streams, both liquid and gaseous, will be within applicable standards and can be released directly to the environment. The major components of the system consist of the following: an organic cleanup unit for the incoming waste strea… more

LSA cyclone incinerator development program for May 1976

Description: Activities during May, 1976, were directed toward installation of the venturi scrubber in the off gas system of the cyclone incinerator and data collection and analysis of samples collected earlier. The report describes the venturi scrubber installation; particulate data; vinyl chloride and hydrocarbon analysis of the off gas stream; HCl determination in the off gas stream; and NOx analysis of the off gas stream.

Remotely operable modular shear system for shearing nuclear reactor spent fuel conceptual design. Final summary report

Description: A unique feature of the shear system is the requirement for a removable master tool module and tool submodule assembly. Each tooling submodule is designed specifically to meet the compaction, gagging, and shearing requirements for specific spent fuel assemblies. These submodules are interchangeable within a common master tool module housing. The cross section of the spent fuel assemblies range from a 4.575-in. hexagonal shrouded to a 8.75-in. square grid-unshrouded. A number of interrelated ini… more

Analysis of a reported magnetic monopole

Description: It is shown that there are several substantive errors in a previous work on a cosmic ray event which is consistent with the hypothesis that it was caused by a magnetic monopole. It is shown that the data points fit to the hypothesis that the responsible particle is a platinum nucleus fragmenting to osmium and then to tantalum. (JFP)

Study of nuclear fragment emission in proton heavy nucleus collision from 10 to 500 GeV/c

Description: We propose to measure the double differential cross section of nuclear fragments (2 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 16), for a given incident momentum, produced by proton heavy nucleus (20 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 80) collisions in the 10 to 500 GeV/c momentum range. Recent experimental results and theoretical speculations suggest collective nuclear motion is initiated by the passage of a fast proton through a heavy nucleus. The novel feature of this experimen… more

Estimated refractive index and solid density of DT, with application to hollow-microsphere laser targets

Description: The literature values for the 0.55-$mu$m refractive index N of liquid and gaseous H$sub 2$ and D$sub 2$ are combined to yield the equation (N - 1) = [(3.15 +- 0.12) x 10$sup -6$]rho, where rho is the density in moles per cubic meter. This equation can be extrapolated to 300$sup 0$K for use on DT in solid, liquid, and gas phases. The equation is based on a review of solid-hydrogen densities measured in bulk and also by diffraction methods. By extrapolation, the estimated densities and 0.55-$mu$m… more

Investigation and Evaluation of Geopressured-Geothermal Wells; Detailed Reentry Prognosis for Geopressure-Geothermal Testing of State Lease 4183 No. 1 Well

Description: This Gruy Federal Type III-A geopressured-geothermal (Geo) prospect was drilled as the Pan American Petroleum Corporation (now Amoco) No. 1 State Lease No. 4183, serial No. 1702399670. The well was abandoned in February 1970. it is located 1,200 feet north and 2,300 feet east from the southwest corner of Section 27, Township 15S, Range 4W. The location is shown on the USGS topographic sheet ''Hog Bayou'', a portion of which is included as figure I. The well is accessible by lease roads off Stat… more

Heat and Mass Transfer in Models of Undeveloped Geothermal Fields

Description: A brief summary is given of the nondimensional equations and relevant parameters to be used for describing convection processes in the geothermal setting. Characteristic estimates of flow rates and pressure variation (beyond the hydrostatic value) are given. it is shown that the complete equation system can be reduced in complexity by neglecting terms which describe physically insignificant effects. The resulting equations are used to consider the onset of convection in a horizontal saturated p… more

Investigation and Evaluation of Geopressured-Geothermal Wells; Detailed Reentry Prognosis for Geopressure-Geothermal Testing of Gladys McCall No. 1 Well

Description: This Gruy Federal Type III-A geopressured-geothermal (Geo) prospect was drilled as the Getty Oil Company and Buttes Gas and Oil Company, No.1 Gladys McCall. It is located in Section 27, Township 15S, Range 5W, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The well is accessible by way of the original canal levee road, approximately 2 1/2 miles south of Louisiana State Route 82; one bridge must be replaced and a board road must be laid on the levee. Buttes completed this well in january, 1970, as a shut-in gas wel… more
