Wind Powering America: The Next Steps in North Carolina

Description: The goal of this project is to apply the WPA’s proactive outreach strategy to the problem of educating the public about the likely transmission infrastructure developments concomitant to the significant development of wind energy resources in North Carolina. Given the lead time to develop significant new transmission infrastructure (5-10 years), it is critical to begin this outreach work today, so that wind resources can be developed to adequately meet the 20% by 2030 goal in the mid- to long-t… more

Wind Powering America's Regional Stakeholder Meetings and Priority State Reports: FY11 Summary

Description: Beginning in 2010, DOE conducted an assessment of Wind Powering America (WPA) activities to determine whether the methods the department had used to help grow the wind industry to provide 2% of the nation's electrical energy should be the same methods used to achieve 20% of the nation's energy from wind (as described in the report 20% Wind Energy by 2030: Increasing Wind Energy's Contribution to U.S. Electricity Supply). After the assessment, it was determined that the initiative's state-based … more

Wind Powering the Government

Description: There are more than half a million Federal buildings with electric bills totaling about $3.5 billion per year. The Wind Powering America Initiative challenges the Federal government to reduce its use of energy produced by fossil fuels by obtaining at least 5% of its electricity from wind by 2010. As part of the current efforts to achieve the initiative's goal, NREL's Technical Information Services published Wind Powering the Government, a brochure that encourages the use of wind energy on Feder… more

Wind pressure distributions at low lift for the XF-92A delta-wing airplane at transonic speeds

Description: Report presenting chordwise pressure distributions measured over the left wing of a Convair XF-92A delta-wing airplane at low lift to determine the effect of Mach number on the wing characteristics at transonic speeds. The critical Mach number of the basic wing was 0.83 for an airplane normal-force coefficient at 0.09. The spanwise load distributions were roughly triangular in shape.

Wind profile measurements at the Mod-1 site at Boone, North Carolina

Description: Three components of the wind field, temperature and pressure were measured by means of tethered balloon-borne sondes from the surface to 175 m (577 ft) and by means of a nacelle mounted system, from the surface to hub height of 43 m (140 ft). Measurements were taken over a ten day period at the Mod-1 Site in Boone, NC. Composite wind profiles are presented for different flow and stability regimes. The most extreme shears, on the order of .3 s/sup -1/, were found between 10 m (33 ft) and hub hei… more

Wind prospector's instrument

Description: In the initial evaluation of a prospective wind turbine site, wind measurements must be made at that site. The report describes an inexpensive data collection device consisting of a microprocessor unit that can be used to record such measurements, producing statistical summaries of wind behavior at the site. Prospectors have often used analogous devices to locate deposits of mineral resources; thus, this device is called a wind prospector's instrument.

Wind resource analysis. Annual report

Description: FY78 results of the Wind Resource Analyses task of the ERAB are described. Initial steps were taken to acquire modern atmosphere models of near-surface wind flow and primary data sets used in previous studies of national and regional wind resources. Because numerous assumptions are necessary to interpret available data in terms of wind energy potential, conclusions of previous studies differ considerably. These data analyses may be improved by future SERI research. State-of-the-art atmosphere m… more
