Description: Ceramic and advanced alloy corrosion in fossil energy systems is being investigated. During 1995-6, ash was collected for testing corrosion resistance of materials in air-blown fluidized-bed gasification systems. Descriptions of the activities are presented in this report, which is an extension of a technical paper on testing corrosion rates of ceramics in coal gasification systems. A section of this report covers factors affecting the composition of ash deposits.

Strongly Correlated F-Electron Systems: A PES Study

Description: The term heavy fermions refers to materials (thus far only compounds with elements having an unfilled 4f or 5f shells) whose large specific heat {gamma}-values suggest that the conduction electrons at low temperatures have a very heavy effective mass. A collision avoidance system for workpiece protection

Description: This paper describes an application of Sandia`s non-contact capacitive sensing technology for collision avoidance during the manufacturing of rocket engine thrust chambers. The collision avoidance system consists of an octagon shaped collar with a capacitive proximity sensor mounted on each face. Description: Data and supporting documentation were compiled and analyzed for 26 cases of gas grab samples taken during waste-tank core sampling activities between September 1, 1995 and December 31, 1997. Strontium-85 and plutonium-239 sorption in rock samples from the Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan

Description: The adsorption and desorption of strontium and plutonium were studied as a function of rock type and simulated ground waters from the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS). Seven different rock types were obtained from the Balapan Region of the STS and were subjected to x-ray diffraction analyses. Use of multiple CT scans to accommodate large objects and stretch dynamic range of detectability

Description: Rotate-only X-ray CT scanners are preferred for their speed and dose utilization, but suffer from the restriction that the scanned object must fit within the radiation beam. In addition, the ratio of signals unattenuated by air paths to those penetrating thick, dense objects often exceeds the dynamic range of conventional X-ray detectors. Electron-phonon scattering in Si doped GaN

Description: Phonon-plasmon scattering in non-resonant Raman spectroscopy is used to determine the free electron concentration in Si doped GaN films. For various doping concentration and variable temperature the correlation with magneto-transport data is established. The freeze-out of the carrier concentration at low temperature is thus observed in a purely optical detection scheme.
